TENSES

The term tense refers to the temporal aspect of a verb in use. Verb tenses are tools that English speakers use to express time in their language. It is important to understand the meaning and use of tenses in English. The form may be like that of a tense in your own language, but the meaning may be different, so let us be very careful! You may find that many English tenses do not have direct translations in our language.
Verb tenses challenge most English language learners. When studied in isolation, a given verb tense is clearly understood, but when put into actual use, one verb tense is easily confused with others. This is because at the conversation level, we do not limit our speech to a single verb tense.
To begin with, the tense is the chief device of indicating the time of an action or state by a finite verb placed in a sentence. Tense is either Present, Past or Future in English as in many other languages. But a special feature of English is that it is possible to describe an action or state in four different ways in each tense – Present, Past and Future.
The four ways or aspects are: 1. Simple or Indefinite
                                                           2. Continuous or Progressive
                                                           3. Perfect
                                                           4.Perfect Continuous or Perfect Progressive
Thus, a single verb can have 12 different forms in the 3 tenses in the Active Voice and another 8 different forms in the Passive Voice.
