You ought to respect elders

Praveen: You didn't attend the meeting yesterday, why? (నిన్న నువ్వు meeting కు రాలేదేం?)

Ravi: I had to attend to some important work at home  (ఇంట్లో ఏదో ముఖ్యమైన పని చేయాల్సి ఉండింది).

Praveen: These meetings are important you see. You ought not to miss them (ఈ సమావేశాలు చాలా ముఖ్యం. వీటిని నువ్వు వదులుకోకూడదు).

Ravi: I know. I had to take mom to hospital. That was more important for me than this meeting, Wasn't it? (అమ్మను నేను ఆస్పత్రికి తీసుకెళ్లాల్సి వచ్చింది. అది దీనికంటే ముఖ్యం కదా?)

Praveen: You are right, of course. Such things ought to be given priority, no doubt. Any way, how is mother?

(అదే సరైన పని. అలాంటి వాటికి మనం ప్రాధాన్యం ఇవ్వాలి. సరే, మీ అమ్మ ఎలా ఉంది?)

Ravi: Much better today. The whole of last week she had neither rest nor good sleep.

That was the reason I think.

(ఈ రోజు చాలా మెరుగు. కిందటి వారం అంతా ఆమెకు విశ్రాంతి లేదు, సరైన నిద్రా లేదు. అదే కారణం అనుకుంటా).

Praveen: You ought not to allow her to do any work at her age

(ఆ వయసులో ఆమెను ఏ పనీ చేయనివ్వకూడదు).

Ravi: You are right. But it couldn't be avoided.

I had to go out of town for a few days to attend to our property matters. My wife had to be out on office work. So mom was alone and had to take care of the children too.

(నిజమే. కానీ తప్పలేదు. నేనేమో మా ఆస్తి విషయాల వల్ల బయటికెళ్లాల్సి వచ్చింది. నా భార్య ఆఫీస్ పని మీద బయటికెళ్లాల్సి వచ్చింది. అందువల్ల, మా అమ్మ పిల్లలను కూడా చూసుకోవాల్సి వచ్చింది).

Praveen: I'm happy she is better now. (ఏదైతేనేం, ఆమె మెరుగ్గా ఉంది. సంతోషం).

Look at the following expressions from the dialogue above.

1) I had to attend to some important work.

2) You ought not to miss them.

3) I had to take mom to hospital.

4) Such things ought to be given priority.

5) You ought not allow her to do any work at home.

కిందటి వారం వరకూ మనం should/ have to/ has to/ must వాడకం తెలుసుకున్నాం కదా? We use these helping verbs to convey, in the present/ future:

1) Obligations (విధిగా చేయాల్సిన పనులు)

2) Commands (Orders -

అంటే, should/ have to/ has to/ must, వీటన్నింటికీ ఒకే past form - had to.

a) Raghu: You were not seen at the party yesterday (నిన్న పార్టీలో నువ్వు కనిపించలేదు).

Naveen: I had to stay at office till seven. (నిన్న Office లో 7 వరకు - Duty in the past)

b) Gopal: You were in a great hurry yesterday (నిన్నేంటీ చాలా తొందరపడుతున్నావు?)

    Harsha: I had to draw money from the bank before 4 = Bank లో డబ్బు తీసుకోవాల్సి వచ్చింది, 4 గంటలలోపు- Necessity in the past (గతంలో అవసరంకొద్దీ చేయాల్సిన పని).

c) The officer passed orders that Chandu had to make files ready in an hour (చందూ files ను గంటలో సిద్ధం చేయాలని Officer ఆజ్ఞాపించాడు) - Duty in the past.

గుర్తుంచుకోవాల్సిన విషయం:

should/ must/ have to/ has to- వీటన్నింటీకీ past form had to.

ఇప్పుడు 'ought to' ఉపయోగం చూద్దాం. Ought to ను కూడా మనం కచ్చితంగా చేయాల్సిన పనులకే వాడతాం. అయితే ought to ఎప్పుడూ నైతికంగా మనం చేయాల్సిన పనులు (Moral obligations) ను తెలుపుతుంది.

a) You ought to respect elders (పెద్దలను గౌరవించాలి). ఇది Order/ duty/ necessity కాదు గదా? మన నైతిక బాధ్యత.

b) Suman: Though I did not have to spend that money, I did (నాకా డబ్బు ఖర్చుపెట్టే అవసరం లేనప్పటికీ, ఖర్చు పెట్టాను).

Janaki: You ought to be careful about money (డబ్బు విషయం జాగ్రత్తగా ఉండాలి - Moral obligation).

c) Prabodh: I think I hurt Suseela (సుశీలను బాధించాననుకుంటా).

Subodh: You did, of course. You ought not have talked to her so. (నిజమే. ఆమెతో అలా మాట్లాడుండకూడదు).

You ought to respect elders (పెద్దలను గౌరవించాలి. (గౌరవించకపోతే, మనకేం శిక్ష పడదు. కానీ అది నీతి)

ఇలా నైతికమైన చర్యలను తెలిపేందుకు 'ought to' వాడతాం.

All that you need to do is...

Tulasi: Do you need any money? If you do, please let me know.

(నీకేమన్నా డబ్బు అవసరమా? అయితే నాకు తెలియపర్చు.)

Sanjana: I don't need any, right now. What I need most now is a steady job. (ప్రస్తుతం డబ్బేం అవసరంలేదు. నాకిప్పుడు అవసరమైందల్లా నిలకడగా ఉండే ఉద్యోగం.)

Tulasi: Is there anything I can do? (నేను నీకు చేయగలిగిందేమన్నాఉందా?)

Sanjana: Yea.

All that you need to do is just introduce me to your cousin in Softech Company. Don't worry. You need not recommend me. (ఉంది. నువ్వు చేయాల్సింది Softech company లో ఉన్న మీ cousin కు పరిచయం చెయ్యి. భయపడకు. నువ్వు నన్నేమీ సిఫారసు చేయనక్కరలేదు.)

Tulasi: What need I to recommend you? I know you deserve any job they can offer. (నిన్ను సిఫారసు చేయాల్సిన అవసరం ఏముంది? వాళ్లివ్వగలిగిన ఏ ఉద్యోగానికైనా నువ్వు అర్హురాలివే.)

Sanjana: Thank you for the high opinion of me. Do that and I don't ask for anything more. (నీకు నామీదున్న అభిప్రాయానికి thanks. అది చెయ్యి. అంతకంటే నేనేమీ అడగను.)

ఇప్పుడు మనం 'need' ఉపయోగం చూద్దాం.

Look at the following sentences from the conversation above:

1) Do you need any money?

2) I don't need any, right now.

3) All that you need to do is, just introduce me to your cousin.

We study here the uses of need as a verb ('need'కు verb గా ఉండే ఉపయోగాలు తెలుసుకుందాం).

Need = చేయాల్సిన అవసరం ఉన్న. (Needను రెండు విధాలుగా వాడతాం - ఒకటి, main verbగా, ఇంకోటి, helping verb గా) Now look at the following:

a) Lalith: Why do you need anybody's help?

    You can do it yourself. (ఇతరుల సాయం నీకేమవసరం? నువ్వే చేసుకోగలవు కదా?)

Lakshman: If I can do it on my own, why do I need others' help? Only because I need it, I am looking for it.

(నేను చేసుకోగలిగితే ఇతరుల సహాయం అవసరం ఏం ఉంది? అది అవసరపడింది కాబట్టే నేను దానికి చూస్తున్నాను.)

'Need' ఈ ఉదాహరణలో అవసరం కలిగి ఉండటం అనే అర్థంతో వాడాం.

b) Mahitha: We should not have allowed him to go. We can't find him again. (మనం అతడిని వెళ్లనివ్వాల్సింది కాదు. మళ్లీ అతడిని కనుక్కోవడం కష్టం.)

Snehitha: Regretting the past is not what is needed now. What is needed now is a clear idea of what we should do.

(గతం గురించి చింతించడం కాదు ఇప్పుడు అవసరం. ఇప్పుడు అవసరమైంది, మనమేం చేయాలనే విషయంలో స్పష్టత.)

గమనిక: Example (b) లో need passive form లో అంటే'be' form + past participle form లో వాడాం.

'Need' ప్రత్యేకత, మనం need ను main verb గానూ వాడతాం, Helping verb (Auxiliary verb/ modal) గానూ ఉపయోగిస్తాం. Modal verb గా need వాడకం మన సంభాషణకు మంచి శక్తినిస్తుంది. వచ్చేసారి అది చూద్దాం.

I know him fairly well...

Jaideep: (Would you) mind joining us for breakfast? (మాతో break fast కు రావడానికేమన్నా అభ్యంతరమా?)

Pramod: Where are you going? (ఎక్కడికెళ్తున్నారు?)

Jaideep: A place where you get the best of breakfasts.

Every thing to your choice and taste (మంచి ఫలహారాల్లో ఉత్తమమైంది దొరికేచోటది. నువ్వు ఎంచుకున్నదీ, నీ రుచికి తగింది).

Pramod: I'd certainly go with you. Where is it? (నేను మీతో వస్తా. ఎక్కడుందది?)

Jaideep: Fairly near, just a kilometre off.

Walking that distance will do us good, especially in the morning. (కాస్త దగ్గరే, ఒక కిలోమీటర్ మాత్రమే.)

Pramod: I'd (I would) rather not then. I am in no position to walk any more. I've (I have) walked enough for the day this morning on my morning walk. (అయితే నేను రానులే. నేనింక నడిచే స్థితిలో లేను. ఈ రోజుకు చాలినంత నడిచా, పొద్దున నడకలో)

Jaideep: Yea. You do look rather tired but fairly hungry too. But join us for breakfast you must. Go to the place on bike and wait for us there. (అవును. నువ్వు కాస్త అలసినట్టుగా, అయితే కొంచెం ఆకలిగా కనిపిస్తున్నావు. కానీ మాతో breakfast తీసుకోవాల్సిందే. నీ bike మీద అక్కడికి వెళ్లి, మా కోసం ఉండు).

Pramod: How long might you take? (ఎంతసేపు పట్టొచ్చు మీకు?)

Jaideep: Pretty soon. We are quite fast walkers you know. (త్వరలోనే. మేం మంచి వేగంగా నడిచేవాళ్లమే కదా?)

Note: 1) to somebody's choice and taste = ఒకరి ఎంపికకు తగినట్టుగా, అభిరుచి/ రుచికనుగుణంగా.

e.g.: You didn't like that movie, I know. But this is to your taste = ఆ సినిమా నీకు నచ్చలేదు. నాకు తెలుసు, కానీ ఇది నీకు నచ్చేదే/ నీ అభిరుచికి తగిందే.

2) Place = మామూలు అర్థం - చోటు. ఇతర అర్థాలు: ఒకరి ఇల్లు/ నివాసం (One's place), Hotel/ restaurant లాంటివి.

3) How long = ఎంతసేపు? 4) How far = ఎంత దూరం? 5) How good? = ఎంత మంచి?/ఎంత ఉపయోగం? (useful)

Now look at the following sentences from the conversation above:

1) Fairly near

2) I'd (I would) rather not then

3) You do look rather tired but fairly hungry too

4) We are quite fast walkers

5) Pretty soon

మన conversation (సంభాషణ)లో చాలా తరచూ fairly, quite and rather వాడుతుంటాం. వాటి ఉపయోగం తెలుసుకుందాం.

ముఖ్యంగా తెలుసుకోవాల్సింది: fairly and rather. ఈ రెంటికీ అర్థం చాలావరకు, అని. అయితే చాలా ముఖ్యమైన తేడా, 'fairly' మంచి విషయాలకూ, 'rather' భావ్యంకాని వాటికి వాడతాం.

e.g.: He is fairly tall × He is rather short (అతడు పొడుగే, ఫర్వాలేదు) × (అతడు పొట్టే)

a) Prajval: How did he do in the exam yesterday? (నిన్న అతడు పరీక్ష ఎలా రాశాడు?)

    Udai: Fairly well. (బాగానే రాశాడు. ఫర్వాలేదు).

b) Ahmed: You know him, don't you? (నీకతడు తెలుసు కదా?)

    Devanand: I know him fairly well but I can't say we are close. (ఫరవాలేదు. అతడు బాగానే తెలుసు నాకు, కానీ మేం సన్నిహితులమని అనలేను).

ఏదైనా మంచి విషయం కాస్త బాగానే ఉంది అనేందుకు fairly వాడతాం.

His chances of winning are fairly good = అతడు గెలిచే అవకాశాలు కాస్త బాగానే ఉన్నాయి.

fairly - some కు ఎక్కువ, very కి తక్కువ.

Rather - కాస్త - fairly ని మంచివాటికి వాడినట్టు, rather మనకిష్టంలేని విషయాలకు, కాస్త ఎక్కువే అనే అర్థంతో వాడతాం.

'fairly' refers to a positive or pleasant idea; 'rather' for a negative or unpleasant idea.

a) Peter: I hope the exam will be fairly easy (పరీక్ష కాస్త సులభంగానే ఉంటుందని ఆశిస్తున్నా).

 Bhaskar: No, I am sure it's going to be rather tough (ఏంలేదు. అది కాస్త కష్టంగానే ఉంటుందని నా నమ్మకం).

b) Vinod: How is your father now? (మీ నాన్నగారెలా ఉన్నారు?)

    Rafi: Still rather ill. (ఇంకా కాస్త జబ్బుగానే ఉన్నాడు).

c) Irfan: What are you complaining about? (దేని గురించి నసుగుతున్నావు?)

Zaheer: The food in the restaurant you took me to was rather badly cooked. My stomach is upset. (నువ్వు నన్ను తీసుకెళ్లిన హోటల్‌లో భోజనం అంత బాగా వండలేదు. నా కడుపులో తిప్పుతోంది.)

Need I do it now itself?

Uma: Nagaraj needed some money and I gave it to him (నాగరాజ్‌కు డబ్బు అవసరమైంది, నేనిచ్చాను అది అతడికి).

Jagadish: Why did he need the money? Just the other day he drew some money from the bank. (అతడికి డబ్బెందుకు అవసరమైంది? ఆ రోజెప్పుడో bank నుంచి డబ్బు తీసుకున్నాడు కదా?)

Uma: You need not worry. He will repay it promptly. (నువ్వు ఆందోళన పడనక్కరలేదు. అన్న సమయానికే/ సకాలానికే తిరిగిచ్చేస్తాడు).

Jagadish: I am not worried. My point is, need he borrow at all? His dad sends him plenty of money. (నాకేం బాధ లేదు. అసలు అప్పు చేయాల్సిన అవసరం లేదు కదా, అని నా ప్రశ్న. వాళ్ల నాన్న బాగానే డబ్బు పంపిస్తాడు కదా?)

Uma: He is prompt, I told you. You don't need to remind him at all (అతడు సకాలానికి చెల్లిస్తాడు. నువ్వతడికి గుర్తుచేయాల్సిన అవసరం కూడా లేదు).

Jagadish: Uma, you need to understand the point that the more the money he has, the more will he waste it. You need not have lent him the money if only not to let him waste it (ఎంత ఎక్కువ డబ్బుంటే అంత వృథా చేస్తాడనే విషయం అర్థం చేసుకోవాల్సిన అవసరం ఉంది. అతడు డబ్బు వృథా చేయకుండా ఉండేదుకైనా నువ్వు డబ్బు ఇవ్వాల్సిన అవసరం లేదు).

Uma: OK. I will make a note of it (సరే. అది గుర్తుంచుకుంటాను).

'Need' has two uses- 1) as a main verb, and 2) as a helping verb.

We have seen the uses of need as a main verb in one of our last lessons. Some examples are:

a) I need your help (నీ సహాయం నాకవసరం)

b) He needed some books, and I told him where he could get them (అతడికి కొన్ని పుస్తకాలు అవసరమయ్యాయి. నేను చెప్పాను అవి ఎక్కడ దొరుకుతాయో) Why did he need your help? (అతడికి నీ సహాయం ఎందుకు అవసరమైంది?)In all the sentences above, need is a 'main verb'.

Look at the following sentences from the conversation above:

1) You need not worry.

2) Need he borrow at all?

3) You don't need to remind him

4) You need to understand the point...

5) You need not have lent him the money

Now study the difference between the following sentences.

a) I need your help (నాకు నీ సాయం అవసరం)

b) I need not take any body's help (నేను ఎవరి సాయమూ తీసుకోనవసరంలేదు) In sentence (a), the verb is need. ఇక్కడ 'need' main verb.

In (b), the verb is, 'need take' and 'need' here is a helping verb/ Auxiliary verb / modal verb.

It is important for us to know the uses of 'need' as a main verb, and also as a helping verb. We have already seen the uses of 'need' as a main verb. Let's now know the uses of 'need' as a helping/ auxiliary verb/ modal.

a) Sankar: Please stay for some more time here. We need your help (ఇంకాసేపు ఉండండి మీరు. మీ సహాయం మాకవసరం).

Sekhar: I need to go home immediately.

People are waiting for me. (నేనింటికి వెళ్లాల్సిన అవసరం ఉంది. కొంతమంది నా కోసం చూస్తున్నారు).

We need your help - ఇక్కడ 'need' ఒక్కటే verb. ఇదిక్కడ finite verb.

I need to go home- ఇక్కడ 'need' మాత్రమే verb కాదు. need to go కలిపి మొత్తం verb - need, have to/ has to/ had to/ ought to లా verb లో ఒక భాగం మాత్రమే. కాబట్టి ఇక్కడ need to, helping verb మాత్రమే. ఇలాంటి సందర్భాల్లో need to దాదాపు 'must' అర్థాన్ని ఇస్తుంది.

a) Sagar: You must do it. (నువ్వది చేయాలి)

    Krishna: Need I do it now itself? (ఇప్పుడే చేయాల్సిన అవసరం ఉందా?/ ఇప్పుడే చేయాలా?)

ఇలా need నుhelping verb గా వాడితే must అర్థం వస్తుంది.

b) Prakash: Need I (= must I) do it now itself? (ఇప్పుడే చేయాల్సిన అవసరం ఉందా?/ చేయాలా?)

Ganesh: You need not, now itself. (ఇప్పుడే చేయాల్సిన అవసరం లేదు).

మీరు గమనించే ఉంటారు.

Must × need not.

I must go (నేను వెళ్లాలి) - దీనికి opposite (వ్యతిరేకం) × I need not/ do not need to go (నేను వెళ్లవలసిన అవసరం లేదు)
