1. Work out = Find a solution to a problem
= సమస్యకు పరిష్కారం కనుక్కోవడం
Work out a problem = Find a solution అని కూడా అంటాం.
a) Bhaskar: We are caught in a big problem. How to get out of it?
(మనం పెద్ద సమస్యలో చిక్కుకున్నాం. బయటపడటం ఎలా?)
Chitra: Let's sit together and study it. We can work it out.
(కూర్చొని పరిశీలిద్దాం. ఏదో విధంగా పరిష్కారం కనుక్కోగలుగుతాం.)
b) Anwar: You haven't yet worked out how we are going to travel without reservation, have you?
(రిజర్వేషన్ లేకుండా మనం ఎలా ప్రయాణించబోతున్నామనే దానికి పరిష్కారం ఏమైనా కనుక్కున్నావా?)
Sahir: I have, of course. I know some one in the railways and he has promised to help.
(నేను కనుక్కున్నా. రైల్వేలో నాకు తెలిసినవారు ఒకరున్నారు. ఆయన సాయం చేస్తానని మాటిచ్చాడు.)
"Work out" has other meanings too:
1) Things do not always work out the way we wanted them to = అన్ని విషయాలూ మనం అనుకున్నట్లుగా జరగవు.
2) Work out = Understand (someone's character) = ఒకరిని అర్థం చేసుకోవడం
He hasn't been able to work her out, though he has been with her for ten years.
(అతడు ఆమెతో పదేళ్లుగా ఉంటున్నా, ఆమెను అర్థం చేసుకోలేకపోతున్నాడు.)
Work out = Calculate = లెక్కపెట్టడం
He worked it out and found we need Rs.10000.
అతడు లెక్కపెట్టాడు. మనకు రూ.10000 అవసరమని తేల్చాడు.
2. Bring up a topic = ఒక విషయాన్ని లేవనెత్తడం/ ప్రస్తావించడం
a) Sunanda: We were discussing plans for future and she suddenly brought up the topic of your marriage.
(మేం భవిష్యత్తు గురించి చర్చిస్తుంటే ఆమేమో నీ పెళ్లి విషయాన్ని ప్రస్తావించింది.)
Vasantha: Why did she do it? I told her not to bring up such matters.
(ఆమె అలా ఎందుకు చేసింది? నేను ఆమెకు అలాంటి విషయాలు ప్రస్తావించవద్దని చెప్పాను.)
b) Chandra: Whatever the topic of discussion, he always brings up the topic of movies.
(మనం చర్చిస్తున్నది ఏ విషయమైనా... అతడు సినిమా విషయాన్ని లేవనెత్తుతాడు.)
Tarun: I'll (I will) warn him not to.

3. Breathe a word of something: రహస్యాన్ని బట్టబయలు చేయడం. ఎక్కువగా దీన్ని "not"తో అంటే రహస్యాన్ని బయట పెట్టవద్దు అనే అర్థంతో వాడతాం.

4. Ran into somebody - Past tense of Run into somebody
= అనుకోకుండా ఎవరినైనా కలుసుకోవడం = Meet somebody unexpectedly.
a) Subba Rao: You are all smiles. What is the matter?
(నీ మొహం నిండా చిరునవ్వు? ఏంటి సంగతి?)
Sekhar: I ran into a childhood friend of mine on my way here. A joke he made is what causes the smile.
(ఇక్కడికి వచ్చే దారిలో నా బాల్యమిత్రుడు కనిపించాడు. వాడు వేసిన జోక్ నాకు ఇంకా నవ్వు తెప్పిస్తోంది.
b) Mani: Hi Gopal, What's news?
(హాయ్ గోపాల్... ఏంటి విశేషాలు?)
Sankar: Look at this news here. Jumping out the window of the house where he had stolen jewellery, the thief ran into a constable on duty.
(ఈ వార్త చూడు. నగలు దొంగిలించిన ఇంటిలోంచి దూకి, బయటకు వస్తూ ఈ దొంగ పోలీసు కానిస్టేబుల్‌కే తటస్థపడ్డాడు.)
5. Poke one's nose into others' affairs: ఇతరుల విషయాల్లో తలదూర్చడం.
a) Ravi: Where were you yesterday?
(నిన్న నువ్వు ఎక్కడున్నావు?)
Nagaraj: Why do you want to know?
Don't poke your nose into my affairs, I warn you.
(నీకెందుకు? నా విషయాల్లో తలదూర్చకు. నీకు గట్టిగా చెబుతున్నా.)
b) Hanuman: You had better tell your friend to keep off me.
(నా విషయాల్లో జోక్యం చేసుకోవద్దని నీ స్నేహితుడితో చెప్పు.)
Siva: Why? What happened?
(ఎందుకు? ఏమయ్యింది?)
Hanuman: He enquired of my cousin how much property I have. How's he interested? Let him not poke his nose into my matters.

6. Hold oneself back = Control oneself = మనల్ని మనం అదుపులో ఉంచుకోవడం.

Banging = దులిపేయడం.
Niraj: I felt like bashing his head against the wall. But I held myself back because I did not want to make a scene in public.

7. Play Safe = Not to take risks (రిస్క్ తీసుకోకుండా ఉండటం.)
a) Ramesh: Why does the government have the food security bill in the PARLIAMENT?
(ప్రభుత్వం ఆహార భద్రతా బిల్లును పార్లమెంటులో ఎందుకు చర్చకు తేవడంలేదు?)
Surya: The government wants to play safe as the opposition parties may not accept it in its present form.)
(ప్రభుత్వం ఎలాంటి రిస్క్ తీసుకోకూడదనుకుంటోంది. ప్రతిపక్షాలు ఆ బిల్లును ప్రస్తుతమున్న రూపంలో వ్యతిరేకిస్తున్నాయి.)
b) Sujana: How about going by train?
(రైల్లో వెళితే ఎలా ఉంటుంది?)
Anushka: We have to risk of not being able to reach on time. Let's play safe by taking a taxi.
