Kavya: Hi Ramya, what are you busy with? You've been silent for an hour now.
(హాయ్ రమ్యా! ఏమిటీ అంత తీరిక లేకుండా ఉన్నావు? గంట నుంచీ నిశ్శబ్దంగా ఉన్నావు.)
Ramya: Don't you see? I've been leafing through this book for some information.
(కనిపించడం లేదా? ఒక సమాచారం కోసం ఈ పుస్తకం పేజీలు తిప్పుతున్నా.)
Kavya: How do you find the book? Interesting, I hope.
(ఎలా ఉంది ఆ పుస్తకం. ఆసక్తికరంగానే ఉందనుకుంటున్నా.) 
Ramya: No question of it being interesting or dull. It's just a book of facts and figures. I am going through it for some information for my research. It isn't a book of fiction.
(అది ఆసక్తికరమా కాదా అనే ప్రశ్న కాదిక్కడ. సమాచారం, అంకెలు తెలిపే పుస్తకం ఇది. నాకేదో సమాచారం కావాల్సి చదువుతున్నా. ఇదేం కథల పుస్తకం కాదు.)

Kavya: The other day I was reading a book of fiction on the train. It laid into some of the evil customs of the society. It was so interesting I could not put it down.
(మొన్న రైల్లో ఒక కథాపుస్తకం చదువుతున్నా. సమాజంలోని దురాచారాలను నిశితంగా విమర్శించిందా పుస్తకం. మూసేయలేనంత ఆసక్తికరంగా ఉందది.)
Ramya: I saw that book you are referring to. Most books by that author abounds in such criticism of the society.
(నేనా పుస్తకం చూశాను. ఆ రచయిత పుస్తకాల్లో చాలావరకు అలాంటి విమర్శలే నిండి ఉంటాయి.)
Kavya: I see you buy a number of such books. Where do you get the money from?
(నువ్వా పుస్తకాలు చాలా కొనడం చూశాను నేను. ఎక్కడ్నించి వస్తోంది నీకంత డబ్బు?) 
Ramya: I put by a part of the pocket money dad gives me, and in a few months it adds up.
(నాన్న నాకిచ్చే పాకెట్ మనీలో కొంత పొదుపు చేస్తాను. అది కొన్ని నెలలకు పెద్ద మొత్తం అవుతుంది).
Kavya: How careful of you! (ఎంత జాగ్రత్త ఉందో నీకు!)
Ramya: Mother often says that I take after my aunt in that respect. It seems she is very careful about money too.
(అమ్మ అంటూ ఉంటుంది - ఆ విషయంలో నాకు మా పిన్ని పోలికలు వచ్చాయని. ఆమె కూడా డబ్బు విషయంలో చాలా జాగ్రత్తగా ఉంటుందట.)
Kavya: You mean your mother's sister that turned up along with you for the function at Niraja's? Oh, I like her very much. I took to her in the very first hour I was with her.
(అంటే నువ్వనేది నీరజ వాళ్లింట్లో జరిగిన ఫంక్షన్‌కు నీతో వచ్చిన మీ పిన్ని గురించా? ఆవిడంటే నాకిష్టం. ఆవిడతో ఉన్న మొదటి గంటలోనే ఆవిడంటే ఇష్టపడ్డాను నేను.)
Ramya: If only to save money, she would make do with what is.
(డబ్బు పొదుపు చేసేందుకు, ఆమె ఉన్నదాంతోనే సర్దుకుపోతుంది.)
Kavya: That's a virtue I am unable to practise try as I might.

Ramya: That requires a bit of will you know. But you are not to spend money like water, either.
(అది చేయడానికి కాస్త నిర్ణయం అవసరం. అలా అని నువ్వేం డబ్బు నీళ్లలా ఖర్చు పెట్టేదానివి కాదులే.)
Kavya: I've been looking for quite some time for a means of quick money and I am unable to think of one.
(కొంతకాలంగా త్వరత్వరగా డబ్బు సంపాదించే మార్గం కోసం చూస్తున్నా. కానీ ఏదీ తోచడం లేదు.)
Ramya: No such thing, buddy. Sweat for it and save it. That's the only way, you know. I don't believe in instant money. Take all the rags to riches stories. They didn't get rich overnight. They slogged their way for it.

Kavya: Will you stop sermonising me. I was just expressing a wish. Who wouldn't wish to be rich in a minute? That doesn't however mean that they are lazy-do-nothings.

పైవన్నీ కూడా English లో తరచూ వినిపించే Phrasal Verbs. English లో బాగా మాట్లాడటానికి లేదా మనం చదివే/ వినే English సరిగా అర్థం అయ్యేందుకు తెలుసుకోవాల్సిన Phrasal Verbs లో పైవి కొన్ని మాత్రమే. ఇప్పుడు చూద్దాం వాటి విషయం.
1) Leaf through= పుస్తకం పేజీలు త్వరగా తిప్పేయడం, అక్కడక్కడ చదువుతూ/ తిరగేయడం.
a) If you want a real solution to your problem, read the book thoroughly, don't just leaf through it.
(నీ సమస్యకు సరైన సమాధానం రావాలంటే ఊరికే పేజీలు తిప్పకుండా ఆ పుస్తకం క్షుణ్నంగా చదువు.)
b) Having nothing else to do, I am just leafing through this magazine.
(చేయడానికి ఏమీ లేక, ఈ magazine తిరగేస్తున్నా.)
2) Going through = చదవడం.
a) If you had gone through the newspaper you would have seen my picture in it.
(ఇవ్వాళ నువ్వు news paper చదివి ఉంటే అందులో నా బొమ్మను చూసి ఉండేదానివి.)
b) Did you go through my article in the magazine last week.
(గత వారం సంచికలో నా వ్యాసం చదివావా?)
3) Lay into = విమర్శించడం
a) Politicians now a days lay into one another. That's how they spend their time without doing the public any good.
(ఈ రోజుల్లో రాజకీయ నాయకులు ఒకరినొకరు విమర్శించుకుంటూ ఉంటారు. ప్రజలకేం సాయం చేయకుండా ఇలాగే కాలం గడుపుతారు.)
b) The movie 'Sankar Dada' lays into the evil practices of doctors.
(శంకర్‌దాదా చిత్రం డాక్టర్ల చెడు కార్యకలాపాలను విమర్శిస్తుంది.)
4) Abound in/ Abound with = సమృద్ధిగా కలిగి ఉండటం
a) The Sea abounds in a number of varieties of fishes.
(సముద్రం చాలారకాల చేపలతో నిండి ఉంటుంది.)
b) The books abounds with information about world governments.
(ఆ పుస్తకంలో ప్రపంచంలోని ప్రభుత్వాలకు సంబంధించిన సమాచారం విరివిగా దొరుకుతుంది.)
5) Put by = to save = పొదుపు చేయడం/ దాయడం
a) I am putting by a part of my salary every month to buy a house.
(ప్రతినెలా నా జీతంలో కొంత భాగం పొదుపు చేస్తున్నా, ఇల్లు కొనడానికి.)
b) All the money he earns he spends, he doesn't put by any amount.
(= put aside any amount) for a rainy day
తను సంపాదించేదంతా అతడు ఖర్చు పెట్టేస్తాడు.
(ఏమీ దాచుకోవడం లేదు/ పొదుపు చేయడం లేదు.)
6) Take after = Resemble = be similar to = పోలి ఉండటం/ అలాగే.
a) She takes after her mother in looks but not in activeness
(ఆకారంలో, ఆమె అచ్చం తన తల్లిలాగే ఉంటుంది. కానీ చురుకుదనంలో మాత్రం కాదు.)
(looks = appearance)
b) 'Who does he take after?'
(అతడిది ఎవరి పోలిక?)
'neither of his parents' (అతడి తల్లిదండ్రులది మాత్రం కాదు.)
7) turn up (for) = హాజరవడం/ ఒక సందర్భానికి రావడం.
a) Though he invited the whole family for the marriage none of them turned up.
(అతడి కుటుంబాన్నంతా పిలిచినా, వాళ్లల్లో పెళ్లికెవరూ రాలేదు.)
b) A good number turned up for the meeting.
(ఆ సభకు పెద్ద సంఖ్యలోనే జనం వచ్చారు.)
8) Take to = ఇష్టపడటం
a) May be he is good, but I never took to him.
(అతడు మంచివాడే కావచ్చు, కానీ నేనతడిని ఇష్టపడలేదు.)
b) My brother hasn't taken to his new school yet. Perhaps it will take some time.
(మా తమ్ముడు కొత్త స్కూల్ అంటే ఇంకా ఇష్టపడటం లేదు. కాస్త సమయం పడుతుందేమో.)
c) They took to cricket on seeing Tendulkar.
(టెండుల్కర్‌ను చూసి క్రికెట్ అంటే ఇష్టపడ్డారు వాళ్లు.)
9) Make do = ఉన్నదాంతో సర్దుకుపోవడం
a) For the present you should make do with this salary. We may think of a rise later.
(ప్రస్తుతానికి నువ్వీ జీతంతోనే సర్దుకో, పెంచే విషయం తర్వాత చూద్దాం.)
10) Sweat for / Slog for = బాగా శ్రమపడటం/ బాగా కృషి చేయడం
(తెలుసు కదా? sweat = చెమట, కాబట్టి sweat for= చెమటోడ్చటం)
a) Both the parents had to sweat for educating their children.
(పిల్లల్ని చదివించేందుకే ఆ తల్లిదండ్రులు చాలా చెమటోడ్చాల్సి వచ్చింది.)
b) Success wasn't easy. He had to slog for it.
(విజయం అతడికి సులభంగా రాలేదు. దాని కోసం అతడు చాలా శ్రమించాల్సి వచ్చింది.)
