Varun: What's the distance like? Around 25 km?

Tharun: Not that far. It is 20 km odd from here. However, given the traffic on this route, it might take half an hour for us on the bike, give or take a few minutes.

పైన underline చేసిన మాటలన్నీ కూడా'About' కు బదులు వాడాల్సిన expressions. అన్నీ కూడా daily real life situations లో వాడదగినవే. అయితే 'About' కు ఉన్న అర్థాల్లో, ఏ అర్థానికి పై expressions సరిపోతాయి అని తెలుసుకోవడం అవసరం.
Meanings of about:
1) Connected with/ concerning something/ a person = దేని/ ఏ వ్యక్తి గురించి
The book is about the scientist and his inventions = ఆ పుస్తకం ఆ శాస్త్రజ్ఞుడు, ఆయన కనిపెట్టిన వాటి గురించి
2) About to do something/ happen = ఏదో చేయబోతూ/ జరగబోతు
He was about to leave = అతడు బయల్దేరబోతున్నాడు
3) About = A little more/ less some amount/ number = దగ్గర దగ్గర/ దాదాపు
ఇప్పుడు మనం 'About' కు ఈ మూడో అర్థం ఉన్న ఇతర పదాల గురించి తెలుసుకుందాం. English లో అవి చాలా ఉన్నాయి.
అంటే దాదాపు/ ఇంచుమించు అనే అర్థం ఇచ్చే English expressions తెలుసుకుందాం.
దాదాపు అనే అర్థం ఉన్న ఇతర పదాలు:
1) Odd = దాదాపు; ఇది Spoken English లో ఎక్కువ వాడతాం; అదీ ముఖ్యంగా, చివర సున్నాలు వచ్చే సంఖ్యాపదాల (20, 30 etc. 100, 200 odd etc.)తో వాడతాం.
a) Sanjana: How old do you think he is? (అతడి వయసు ఎంతని అనుకుంటున్నావు?)
Samyuktha: Oh, I don't know thirty odd, I suppose (ఓ, నాకు తెలియదు, దాదాపు 30 ఏళ్ల‌నుకుంటా)
b) Piyush: Santan is very brilliant. (శంతన్ చాలా తెలివైనవాడు).
Sashank: How do you know? (ఎలా తెలుసు?)
Piyush: In a class of fifty odd students he alone scored 80 odd marks. (దాదాపు 50 మంది ఉన్న class లో అతనొక్కడే దాదాపు 80 మార్కులు తెచ్చుకున్నాడు).
2) Give or take = more or less = అటో ఇటో - ముఖ్యంగా సంఖ్యలకు (numbers), కిలోమీటర్లు/ మైళ్లలో దూరాన్ని గురించి చెప్పేటప్పుడు, time (సమయాన్ని గురించి) చెప్పేటప్పుడు వాడతాం.a) Ganesh: What is he worth? (అతడి విలువెంత? = అతడికున్న సంపాదన ఎంత?)

దాదాపు ఇంత/ ఇన్ని అని అంచనా వేసిన.

అయితే గమనించాల్సిన విషయం: ఇది మనకు అంత కచ్చితంగా తెలియని, అంత ప్రాముఖ్యం ఇవ్వనవసరం లేని సమయం, తేదీ, సంవత్సరం ముందు వాడతాం.
a) Ekambar: Did you see him leave? When? (అతడు వెళ్లడం నువ్వు చూశావా? ఎప్పుడు?)
Gajanan: I did. At 7 or there about.
(చూశాను. దాదాపు 7 గంటలప్పుడు).
b) Hasan: These apartments look rather old (ఈ apartments కాస్త పాతవిగానే కనిపిస్తున్నాయి.)

5) Almost = దాదాపు. ఇది చాలా సాధారణంగా మామూలు conversation లో వినిపించే మాట = About. వాడుకలో దీనికి వైవిధ్యం కూడా ఎక్కువ. దాదాపు అని మాత్రమే కాకుండా, 'అన్నంత పనీ చేశారు' అనే అర్థం కూడా వస్తుంది.
a) It's almost 10 years since he left his place =
ఆయన ఇక్కడి నుంచి వెళ్లిపోయి దాదాపు పదేళ్లయ్యింది.(హైదరాబాద్ విజయవాడకు ఈశాన్యంగా 300 కిలోమీటర్ల దూరంలో ఉంది కొన్ని కిలోమీటర్లు ఎక్కువ తక్కువగా).
b) Jagan: How much did he spend on his daughter's marriage? (వాళ్ల అమ్మాయి పెళ్లికి ఎంత ఖర్చు చేశాడు?)
Mohan: Almost Rs 50 lakh. (దాదాపు రూ. 50 లక్షలు).
అయితే 'almost' ను ఇలా కూడా వాడతారు:
a) He almost died of the disease = ఆ జబ్బుతో ఆయన దాదాపు మరణించినంత పనైంది (కానీ మరణించలేదు).
b) The robbers almost killed him =
ఆ దోపిడీ దొంగలు అతడిని చంపినంత పనిచేశారు (కానీ చంపలేదు).
6) In the region of: ఆ ప్రాంతంలో; దేన్నైనా ఉజ్జాయింపుగా అంచనా వేసి/ ఊహించి చెప్పడం. దీన్ని something/ somewhere in the region of

అయితే 'Approximately' (దాదాపు) గ్రాంథికం/ శాస్త్రపరిభాషలో ఎక్కువగా వాడతారు.
a) It weights approximately 99 gms = అది సుమారుగా 99 గ్రాములు ఉంటుంది. (= ఆ ప్రాంతంలో/ ఇంచుమించుగా) అని వాడతాం.
