'పెద్ద' అనే అర్థంతో big, large, vast లాంటి మాటలు చాలా సామాన్యంగా వాడుతుంటాం. ఇవే కాకుండా, దాదాపుగా ఇదే అర్థంతో huge, immense, enormous అనే మాటలు కూడా ఉపయోగంలో ఉన్నాయి. అయితే వీటికి సూక్ష్మమైన తేడాలూ ఉన్నాయి. ఇప్పుడు వాటిని చూద్దాం.
1) Big = ఇది చాలా ఎక్కువగా వినబడే మాట- మనకు తెలిసిన పరిమాణం (Size) కంటే ఎక్కువగా ఉన్న/ పెద్దదైన దేన్నైనా, 'big' అనే అంటాం కదా!
a) The house is big = అది పెద్ద ఇల్లు.
b) The college has big buildings = ఆ కళాశాలకు పెద్ద భవనాలు ఉన్నాయి.
'పెద్ద' అనే అర్థాన్ని భౌతిక పరిమాణానికి మాత్రమే కాకుండా కొన్నిసార్లు, 'ముఖ్యమైన' (important) అనే అర్థంతో కూడా వాడతాం.
Pradhan: Can't we meet him without appointment?.
(అనుమతి లేకుండా అతడిని కలుసుకోలేమా?)
Vibhav: What do you think of him? He is a big man in the film industry.
(అతడి గురించి ఏమనుకుంటున్నావు నువ్వు? చిత్ర పరిశ్రమలో ఆయన చాలా ముఖ్యుడు.)
వ్యావహారిక భాష (colloquial language)లో ఎక్కువ మొత్తం డబ్బుకు, "big money" అని కూడా అంటుంటాం.
Pavan: This building costs Rs.70 lac.(ఈ భవనం ఖరీదు రూ. 70 లక్షలు.)
Sravan: That's big money indeed. That's beyond me.
(అది చాలా పెద్ద మొత్తమే. నాకు భారమైందే అది.)
2) Large: దీని అర్థం కూడా 'big' అనే. అయితే ఇది కాస్త formal - మామూలు spoken language లో అంతగా వాడం.
a) Large areas surrounding the villages are under flood waters.
(ఆ గ్రామం చుట్టూ ఆవరించిన నేల ఎక్కువ విస్తీర్ణంలో వరద నీళ్లల్లో మునిగి ఉంది.)
b) Large sums of money have been spent on the project so far.
(ఆ ప్రాజెక్టు కోసం చాలా పెద్ద/ఎక్కువ మొత్తంలో డబ్బు ఖర్చు పెట్టారు.)
'Large' ప్రమాణానికే (Size) కాకుండా, number/amount కు కూడా వాడతాం.
3) Vast = Extremely large in area/ size/ amount = చాలా ఎక్కువ విస్తీర్ణం/ పరిమాణం/ మొత్తం అనే అర్థంతో వాడతాం - Big, Large కంటే Vast మరింత ఎక్కువను సూచిస్తుంది.
Vast areas = Very large areas = బాగా ఎక్కువ విస్తీర్ణం ఉన్న ప్రదేశాలు.
India is a vast country.. (భారత్ చాలా పెద్ద దేశం.)
It has vast population.(దాని జనాభా చాలా ఎక్కువ.)
It is a country with vast natural resources.
(అది బాగా ఎక్కువ ప్రకృతి వనరులున్న దేశం.)
గుర్తు పెట్టుకోండి ఇలా...
Big (మామూలుగా వాడే మాట - ముఖ్యంగా మాట్లాడేటప్పుడు) = Large (ఎక్కువగా గ్రాంథికం) Vast = big/ large కంటే బాగా పెద్ద/ఎక్కువ.
4) ఇదే అర్థంతో ఉన్న మరో మాట - Huge = Extremely large in size, amount, or degree
a) A huge dog guarded the entrance to the huge building.
ఒక పే...ద్ద కుక్క ఆ పే...ద్ద ఇంటిని కాపలా కాస్తోంది (గతంలో)
b) A huge crowd attended the meeting.
(ఆ సభకు జనం గుంపులు, గుంపులుగా చాలా పెద్ద సంఖ్యలో వచ్చారు.)
c) The company earned huge profits last year.
(కిందటేడాది ఆ కంపెనీ చాలా ఎక్కువ లాభాలు గడించింది.)
d) Huge amounts of money changed hands in the Jalayagnam program and the 2G scam.
(జలయజ్ఞం పథకం, 2G కుంభకోణంలో చాలా పెద్ద మొత్తాలు చేతులు మారాయి.)
5) Immense = huge = బాగా పెద్దదైన/గొప్పదైన /ముఖ్యమైన/ తీవ్రమైన.
The city with its immense population is experiencing shortage of water.
అతి ఎక్కువ జనాభాతో ఉన్న ఆ నగరం నీటికొరతను ఎదుర్కొంటోంది.
a) Sita, as the wife of Sri Rama was a woman of immense patience.
(సీతాదేవి విపరీతమైన ఓర్పు గలది.)
Immense fame = గొప్ప కీర్తి.
b) This project is of immense importance to the people of this area.
(ఈ ప్రాంత ప్రజలకు ఈ ప్రాజెక్ట్ చాలా ప్రాముఖ్యమైంది.)
c) Immense joy could be seen on their faces when they heard the news.
(ఆ వార్త వినగానే వాళ్ల మొహాల్లో చాలా ఎక్కువ సంతోషం కనిపించింది.)
6) On the high side = Slightly high - especially price, size etc.,
ధర, పరిమాణం లాంటివి కాస్త ఎక్కువే అనేందుకు ఈ మాటలు వాడతాం.
a) Rs. 50 lac for that house is on the high side.
ఆ ఇంటికి యాభై లక్షల రూపాయలు కాస్త ఎక్కువే.
b) His weight, for a man of his age and height is on the high side.
అతడి బరువు, ఆ వయసు, ఆ ఎత్తున్న వ్యక్తికి కాస్త ఎక్కువే.
c) Such a price for a used car as certainly on the high side.
వాడిన కారుకు అలాంటి ధర కాస్త ఎక్కువే.
7) Hefty: Used especially for a big amount of money, especially some one has to pay.
(పెద్ద మొత్తంలో డబ్బును, ముఖ్యంగా మనం విధిగా చెల్లించాల్సినప్పుడు అనే అర్థంతో వాడతాం).
a) He had to pay a hefty fine of three hundred for a slight violation of traffic rules.
(చిన్న traffic నిబంధన ఉల్లంఘనకు అతడు మూడు వందల రూపాయల పెద్ద రుసుం చెల్లించాల్సి వచ్చింది.)
b) The college charges hefty admission fees.
(ఆ కళాశాల పెద్ద మొత్తంలోనే ఫీజులు వసూలు చేస్తుంది.)
