ఒకే రకంగా కనిపిస్తూ కొద్దిమార్పులతో ఉండే జంట పదాలు కొన్ని ఉన్నాయి. వాటి మధ్య భేదాలను విద్యార్థులు స్పష్టంగా తెలుసుకోవాలి. వాటిని వాక్యాల్లో ఎలా ప్రయోగించాలో కూడా గమనించాలి. తికమకపెట్టే అలాంటి కొన్ని పదాలను పరిచయం చేసుకుందాం!
Madhu: It was a terrible accident, wasn't it? Of the five passengers in the car only two survived, among them a boy of ten years (అది ఘోరమైన ప్రమాదం కదా? కారులోని ఐదుగురు ప్రయాణికుల్లో ఇద్దరే బయటపడ్డారు సురక్షితంగా. వాళ్లలో ఒకడు పదేళ్లబ్బాయి).
Sundar: The car swerved into a field by the road and turned turtle. What a horrible sight it was! (ఆ కారు రోడ్డు పక్కనే ఉన్న పొలంలోకి దూసుకెళ్లిపోయి తలకిందులైంది).
Madhu: The one driving, the father of the boy that survived, it seems, was a compulsive drunkard. He must have been drunk while driving. The driver was seated next to him (ఆ కారు నడుపుతున్నాయన బతికి ఉన్న ఆ కుర్రాడి తండ్రి. తాగుడు లేనిదీ ఉండలేడట. ఆయన నడుపుతున్నపుడు బాగా తాగి ఉండుండాలి).
Sundar: But the swiftness with which the driver and the ambulance people acted was terrific. They rushed the survivors along with the dead to the hospital just in an hour (కానీ ఆ డైవరు, అంబులెన్సు వాళ్లు తీసుకున్న తక్షణ చర్యలు చాలా గొప్పగా ఉన్నాయి. ఆ బతికున్న వాళ్లనూ, చనిపోయినవాళ్లనూ గంటలో ఆసుపత్రిలో చేర్చారు).
Madhu: Isn't it compulsory that they should first move the victims to a government hospital? How did they move them to a private hospital? (వాళ్లు బాధితులను ప్రభుత్వాసుపత్రికి చేర్చడం అనేది తప్పనిసరిగా చేయాలి కదా? మరెలా ప్రైవేటు ఆసుపత్రికి తరలించారు?)
Sundar: No such rule. formerly it was so. Immediate medical aid is the important thing, you see (అలాంటి నిబంధన ఏమీ లేదు. ఇంతకు ముందుండేది. తక్షణ వైద్యసహాయం అనేది ముఖ్యం, తెలుసు కదా).
Madhu: When will our roads be safer? (ఎప్పటికి మన రహదారులు క్షేమకరంగా ఉంటాయో?)
Notes:
1. Survive = ఏదైనా ప్రమాదం తర్వాత బతికి ఉండడం. survivor = అలా బతికి ఉండేవాళ్లు
Nobody survived the plane accident in the southern Indian ocean last month = క్రితం నెల దక్షిణ హిందూ మహాసముద్రంలో మాయమైన విమాన ప్రమాదంలో ఎవరూ బతికి బయటపడలేదు.
Survive= 2. outlive the dead in a family = ఒక కుటుంబంలో ఎవరన్నా చనిపోయిన తర్వాత బతికుండడం
He died yesterday. His wife and son survive him = ఆయన నిన్న చనిపోయాడు. ఆయన భార్య, కొడుకు బతికున్నారు.
No one survived the plane crash = విమాన ప్రమాదంలో బతికి బయటపడ్డవాళ్లెవరూ లేరు = No survivors in the plane crash
2. Swerve = turn suddenly = అకస్మాత్తుగా పక్కకు తిరగడం (ముందున్న వాహనాన్ని తప్పించేందుకు)
Now look at the following pairs of words:
A. i) Terrible ii) Terrific
B. i) Compulsive ii) Compulsory
A. i) Terrible = horrible, shocking (భయంకరమైన/ ఘోరమైన)
a) Pavan: You appear shocked and you are shivering. What happened? (దిగ్భ్రాంతితో వణికిపోతున్నట్టున్నావు. ఏమైంది?)
Jeevan: Oh, God. It was really terrible, the scene of the accident in the next street. A lorry hit a girl on her scooter. She is now lying in a pool of blood (ఓరి భగవంతుడా. చాలా ఘోరంగా ఉందది, ఆ ప్రమాదం జరిగిన దృశ్యం. పక్కవీధిలో స్కూటర్‌ మీద వెళ్తున్న అమ్మాయిని లారీ ఢీకొంది. ఆ అమ్మాయి రక్తపు మడుగులో పడివుంది).
b) Sindhu: Why were you absent from college yesterday? Where were you? (నిన్న కాలేజికి రాలేదేం? ఎక్కడున్నావు?)
Sowbhagya: Someone had been after my cousin for months and her parents reported it to the police. He threw acid on her and she has terrible burns on her face (మా కజిన్‌ను ఎవరో కొంతకాలంగా వెంబడిస్తున్నాడు. ఆమె తల్లిదండ్రులతో చెప్తే వాళ్లు పోలీసులకు పిర్యాదు చేశారు. వాడు ఆమె మీద ఆసిడ్‌ పోశాడు. ఆమె మొహం అంతా భయంకరమైన ఆసిడ్‌ కాలుడు గాయాలయ్యాయి).
ii. Terrific = Excellent/ Wonderful = అద్భుతమైన
a) Raghav: Could you get the tickets for the movie yesterday? (నిన్న సినిమాకు టిక్కెట్లు దొరికాయా?)
Brijesh: Of course, I did. The movie was excellent and the heroine's action was terrific (ఆ తెచ్చుకున్నాను. సినిమా చాలా బాగుంది. ఆ కథానాయిక నటన అద్భుతంగా ఉంది/ అదరగొట్టేసింది).
b) Chetana: You look terrific in this dress. Where did you buy it and for how much? (ఈ డ్రెస్‌లో నువ్వు చాలా అద్భుతంగా కనిపిస్తున్నావు. ఎక్కడ ఎంతకు కొన్నావది?)
Sailaja: About Rs. 1000. Terrifically cheap, isn't it? (దాదాపు వెయ్యి రూపాయలే. బ్రహ్మాండమైన చవక కదా?)
B. i) Compulsive = Difficult to stop or control, mostly of behaviour and habits (ఆపుకోలేని, అదుపులో ఉంచుకోలేని- ముఖ్యంగా ప్రవర్తన/ అలవాట్ల విషయంలో).
Krishna: Where is Madhu? Not seen him in weeks. (మధు ఏడి? వారాలయింది చూసి).
Vasu: He's (He has) been hospitalised for some liver problem. He is a compulsive liquor addict and the condition is serious (కాలేయం సమస్య ఉన్నందున అతన్ని ఆసుపత్రిలో చేర్చారు. అతను తన తాగుడును అదుపు చేసుకోలేడు/ తాగనిదే ఉండలేడు. పరిస్థితి చాలా ప్రమాదకరంగా ఉంది).
b) Dharmaraja lost his kingdom, brothers and even his wife because he was a compulsive gambler (ధర్మరాజు తను ఆపుకోలేని జూదం వ్యసనం వల్ల తన రాజ్యాన్ని, తమ్ముళ్లను, చివరికి భార్యనూ కోల్పోయాడు).
ii) Compulsory = to be done because of a rule or a law = విధిగా చట్టం/ నిబంధనల ప్రకారం చేయాల్సిన/ తప్పని.
a) Govardhan: Have you to pay the whole amount now? You are going to be here only for sometime (మొత్తం డబ్బు ఇప్పుడే చెల్లించాలా? నువ్విక్కడ కొద్దికాలమే ఉంటావు కదా?)
Janardan: Payment of the whole amount is compulsory whatever the period you stay for (మొత్తం డబ్బు విధిగా చెల్లించాల్సిందే- నిబంధనల ప్రకారం నువ్వెంతకాలం ఉన్నా).
b) The study of English is compulsory from class 1, in this school (ఈ స్కూల్లో ఇంగ్లిష్‌ మొదటి తరగతి నుంచి తప్పక చదవా)
