Rashtriya Ekta Diwas 
PM Narender Modi paid rich tribute to the Iron Man of India Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on his 145th Birth Anniversary on 31 October 2020 visiting the statue of Liberty at Kevadia, Gujrat. Patel birth day observed as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day). PM addressed the 'Ekta Diwas Parade'. He inaugurated Arogya Van at Kevadia, set up in the 17 acres of land for spreading awareness on Yoga, Ayurveda and Meditation. The Children Nutrition Park, the world's first-ever technology-driven nutrition park for children was inaugurated as part of PM visit, which is spread over an area of 35,000 square feet. Aslo Modi inaugurated Sardar Patel Zoological Park, popularly known as Jungle Safari. PM launched India’s first seaplane service between the Statue of Unity and Sabarmati Riverfront in Ahmedabad. It covers 200 km, reducing the travel time to 45 minutes from the usual four hours by road.


Guru Tegh Bahadur’s 400th birth anniversary
On 25 October 2020, the union government set up a high-level committee to commemorate Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur’s 400th birth anniversary. The committee will be headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Guru Tegh Bahadur was the ninth Sikh guru who sacrificed himself for religious freedom.


“Suraksha Kawach’’
“Suraksha Kawach (security shield)”, a joint anti-terrorist exercise was held between Indian Army and Maharashtra Police at Pune (Maharashtra). The exercise involved the participation of Quick Reaction Teams (QRTs), Dog Squads, Bomb Disposal Teams of Army as well as Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS).


Anemia Mukt Bharat Index
Anemia Mukt Bharat Index was revealed in the 8th Governing Body Meeting of the State Health Society of the National Health Mission (NHM) in Chandigarh. In the index, Haryana got first rank which achieved 93 percent of immunization. The Anemia Mukt Bharat, an initiative of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and UNICEF, has been launched to reduce the prevalence of Anemia all over India.


Red Light On Gaadi Off
‘Red Light On Gaadi Off’ campaign launched by Delhi Chief minister Arvind Kejriwal. The campaign will encourage people to switch engines of their vehicles off while waiting at traffic signals. This behavioural change campaign fight against air pollution. Idling (waiting at a traffic signal with engine on) consumes more fuel than a normal drive. Around 10 million vehicles are registered in Delhi. Even if one million of them actively follow the campaign, experts suggest that it can reduce PM10 emissions by 1.5 tonnes a year and PM2.5 emissions by 0.4 tonnes a year.


Cloud Innovation Centre
On 19 October 2020, the Amazon Web Services (AWS) and the NITI Aayog declared that they set up a Frontier Technologies Cloud Innovation Center (CIC) that will work on addressing societal challenges around areas like agriculture and healthcare through digital innovation. This is the first AWS Cloud Innovation Center in India, the 12th around the world, and the first AWS Center will address societal challenges at a national level.

SERB-POWER
The government of India launched the SERB – POWER schemes (“SERBPOWER (Science and Engineering Research Board - Promoting Opportunities for Women in Exploratory Research)” that aim to encourage emerging as well as eminent women researchers to undertake research and development activities in frontier areas of science and engineering. The aim of the scheme is to mitigate gender disparity in science and engineering research funding in various Science and Technology programs in Indian academic institutions and R&D laboratories.


Zozila Tunnel
On 15 October 2020, the Union Road Transport, Highways minister Nitin Gadkari launched the first blasting for
construction related work at the 14.15 km Zojila tunnel, one of the longest in Asia. The tunnel will provide all-weather connectivity between Srinagar valley and Leh (Ladakh plateau) on NH-1, and will bring about an all-round economic and socio-cultural integration of Jammu & Kashmir. The tunnel would reduce the travel time from 3 hours to 15 minutes with avalanche-free travel on the SrinagarLeh section of NH1.


Parampara Series 2020
On 27 October 2020 Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu launched the virtual festival of ‘Parampara Series 2020National Festival of Music and Dance’ organized by Natya Tarangini in partnership with the United Nations Organisation(UNO). UNO Resident Coordinator Renata Dessallien cohosted the festival.


First-ever multi-modal logistic park
On 20 October 2020, the Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari virtually laid the foundation stone for the first-ever multi-modal logistic park of the country in Assam. The Rs. 694 crore park at Jogighopa will provide direct connectivity to air, road, rail and waterways to the people of Assam and other parts of North East. It will also give employment to 20 lakh people and will be developed under the Bharatmala Pariyojana of the Central government.


BrahMos
On 18 October 2020, the naval version of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile was successfully test-fired from INS Chennai, an indigenously built stealth destroyer of the Indian Navy in the Arabian Sea. The missile
hit the target with pin-point accuracy after performing “extremely complex” manoeuvres.


SLINEX
The eighth edition of the annual Indian Navy and Sri Lanka Navy bilateral maritime exercise SLINEX-20 strengthened mutual cooperation in the maritime domain. It enhances inter-operability, improve mutual understanding and exchange best practices and procedures for multifaceted maritime operations between both navies. Sri Lanka Navy represented by SLN Ships Sayura (Offshore Patrol Vessel) and Gajabahu (Training Ship). Indigenously built ASW corvettes Kamorta and Kiltan and Dornier Maritime Patrol Aircraft represented India in the two-day exercise held between 19 and 21 October 2020 in Trincomalee coast, Sri Lanka.

International

Basic Exchange and Cooperation Agreement
On 27 October 2020, India and the USA signed the Basic Exchange and Cooperation Agreement (BECA) for Geo-Spatial Cooperation during the third annual 2 + 2 India-US ministerial dialogue. The agreement will allow sharing of high-end military technology, classified satellite data and critical information between the two countries.


Global Hunger Index 2020
Global Hunger Index jointly published by Concern Worldwide and Welthungerhilfe, designed to comprehensively measure and track hunger at the global, regional, and country levels. India ranked 94 among 107 nations in the Global Hunger Index 2020 and is in the 'serious' hunger category. Chad got 107th rank, the most hunger nation in the index. As per the report, 14% of India's population is undernourished. It also showed the country recorded a 37.4% stunting rate among children under five and a wasting rate of 17.3 %. The under-five mortality rate stood at 3.7%.


SCO Prosecutors Generals Meet
18th meeting of Prosecutors General of SCO (Shanghai Cooperation Organisation) was held via video conference. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta participated in the meet who said that India has zero tolerance to corruption and black money. India will host the next meeting of Prosecutors General in 2021.


ILO Governing Body Chairman
India assumed the Chairmanship of the Governing Body of International Labour Organization (ILO) after 35 years. Union Labour and Employment Secretary, Apurva Chandra, has been elected as the Chairperson of the Governing Body of the ILO for the period October 2020- June 2021.

President of FATF Marcus Pleyer declared that Pakistan will remain in the grey list as it has not been able to fulfil 6 out of the 27 mandates to check terror funding. Financial Action Task Force (FATF) is a global terror financing watchdog.

BRICS Parliamentary Forum
On 27 October 2020, the Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla virtually addressed the meeting of the VIth BRICS Parliamentary Forum. The theme of the summit “BRICS partnership in the interest of the global stability, general safety and innovative growth: parliamentary dimension.”


Y20 Summit
On 15 October 2020, the Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Kiren Rijiju represented India in the Y20 Global Summit aimed at exchanging ideas and dialogues between nations to empower the youth across the world. The theme of the Summit ‘'Government - Youth dialogue on postCOVID-19 opportunities'’. The Y20 Youth Summit is a youthled event bringing young leaders from across G20 countries to discuss and debate the G20 Leaders' agenda. The Summit concluded with the drafting of the Y20 communique.


International Migration  Outlook 2020
India ranked second in terms of the “total” inflow of new migrants to OECD countries during the year 2018 as well as in the number of Indians obtaining citizenship of these countries. China retained the top position as the largest source country. China maintained its top spot with 4.3 lakh migrants, while India has 3.3 lakh emigrants. Angel Gurria, the secretarygeneral at OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) released “International Migration Outlook 2020” report on 19 October 2020.
OECD is an association of 37 developed countries such as Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand and the United States – which often attract immigrants for work opportunities, education and asylum.

To recognise the importance of statistics for the progress of the world, the World Statistics Day observed on 20 October. Theme is ‘connecting the world with data we can trust.’ This theme reflects on the importance of trust, authoritative data, innovation and the public good in national statistical systems. It is to be noted that to combat the issue of misinformation, the United Nations came up with World Statistics Day which is celebrated every 5 years on October 20 by people all across the globe.


Denmark Open
Japan’s former world champion Nozomi Okuhara defeated Spain’s Carolina Marin to clinch Denmark Women Badminton Open Championship. This tournament took place at the Odense sports park in Denmark from 13 to 18 October 2020. Anders Antonsen of Denmark won the men's singles title by defeating Rasmus Gemke. English men players Chris Langridge and Marcus Ellis got men doubles crown defeating Russian pair Vladimir Ivanov and Ivan Sozonov. Yuki Fukushima and Sayaka Hirota, both from Japan defeated Mayu Matsumoto and Wakana Nagahara to get women doubles title.

United Nations Organisation (UNO) officially came into existence on 24 October 1945. United Nations Day marks the anniversary of the entry into force in 1945 of the UN Charter. The year 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of the United Nations and its founding Charter. The name "United Nations" was coined by the USA President Franklin D. Roosevelt and first used in the Declaration by United Nations of 1 January 1942, during Second World War. H On this occasion the Department of Posts, the Union Ministry of Communications, India released a commemorative postage stamp on UNO.
