International 

World Students' Day
The birth anniversary of APJ Abdul Kalam is celebrated as World Students' Day on 15th  October. Dr Kalam was a great teacher, an eminent scientist and a great statesman. So-called the ‘people’s president’ and ‘Missile Man of India’, he encouraged students to dream big and never be afraid of failure. The theme of World Students Day 2020 is "Learning for people, planet, prosperity, and peace".


French open
Rafael Nadal defeated Novak Djokovic 6-0, 6-2, 7-5 to win his 13th French Open.  With this victory, Nadal equalled Roger Federer with 20 Grand Slam titles. Polish woman player Iga Swiatek won the first Grand slam by defeating Sofia Kenin of USA. German duo Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies retained their French Open Men doubles crown as they have beaten Croatian Mate Pavic and Brazilian Bruno. Timea Babos of Hungary and Kristina Mladenovic of France retained their women Open doubles title as they claimed their fourth Grand Slam as a pair defeating Desirae Krawczyk of the USA and Alexa Guarachi of American born Chilean.


International Day of the Girl Child
The International Day of the Girl observed on 11 October 2020. The theme of the day is “My voice, our equal future”. Every year on this day UNICEF (United Nations Children's Fund) launches an annual campaign with girls to amplify their voices and stand up for their rights. The main objective of this day is to empower women and help them to get their rights so that they can face the challenges all over the world and meet their needs. To commemorate the day, the World Health Organization co-organized a virtual intergenerational dialogue between girl advocates and highlevel leaders about putting girls and their rights at the centre of decisionmaking processes.


World Space Week
World Space Week observed between 4-10 October every year to celebrate the contributions of space science and technology to the betterment of the human condition. The observation is the largest annual space event in the world to help the workforce of tomorrow by inspiring students, demonstrates visible public support for the space programme, educates the public about space activities and fosters international cooperation in space outreach and education. 2020 World Space Week is dedicated to satellites and their broad benefits under the theme “Satellites improve life.”

 

Noble Prizes - 2020

Physics
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics 2020 with one half to Roger Penrose “for the discovery that black hole formation is a robust prediction of the general theory of relativity" and the other half jointly to Reinhard Genzel and Andrea Ghez "for the discovery of a supermassive compact object at the centre of our galaxy".
These three Laureates share 2020 Nobel Prize in Physics for their discoveries about one of the most exotic phenomena in the universe, the black hole.

 

Chemistry
The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2020 was awarded jointly to Emmanuelle Charpentier and Jennifer A. Doudna "for the development of a method for genome editing."
Both discovered one of gene technology’s sharpest tools: the CRISPR/ Cas9 genetic scissors. Using these, researchers can change the DNA of animals, plants and microorganisms with extremely high precision.

 

Literature
The Nobel Prize in Literature 2020 was awarded to Louise Gluck "for her unmistakable poetic voice that with austere beauty makes individual existence universal". Louis Gluck made her debut in 1968 with a collection of poetry ‘Firstborn’ and was soon acclaimed as one of the most prominent poets in American contemporary literature.

 

Economics
Paul Milgrom and Robert Wilson have won the 2020 Nobel Economics Prize for their work on auction theory. The Stanford University game theorists have helped in developing formats for the sale of aircraft landing slots, radio spectrums, and emissions trading.

 

Peace prize
The Nobel Peace Prize 2020 was awarded to World Food Programme (WFP) "for its efforts to combat hunger, for its contribution to bettering conditions for peace in conflict-affected areas and for acting as a driving force in efforts to prevent the use of hunger as a weapon of war and conflict."

 

Physiology
The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2020 was awarded jointly to Harvey J. Alter, Michael Houghton and Charles M. Rice "for the discovery of Hepatitis C virus."

 

National

SMART
Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) conducted a successful flight test of the Supersonic Missile Assisted Release of Torpedo (SMART) from Wheeler Island off the coast of Odisha on 5 October 2020. It is a major technology breakthrough for stand-off capability in antisubmarine warfare. SMART is a missile assisted release of lightweight Anti-Submarine Torpedo System for anti-submarine warfare (ASW) operations for far beyond torpedo range.

 

Impact-based cyclone warning system
India Meteorological Department (IMD) launched a dynamic, impact-based cyclone warning system aimed at minimising economic losses and damage to property from cyclones that hit the country’s coasts every year.


DISHTAVO
DISHTAVO (Digital Integrated System for Holistic Teaching and Virtual Orientations), an online e-learning platform launched by Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant. Goa is the first state in the country to take the entire academic syllabus of higher education to an online platform. Goa is also the first State to train teachers in online teaching. The lessons put on DISHTAVO will be upgraded timely and students can watch them offline too.


Internet to 5,000 village panchayats
As a part of Government of India’s flagship BharatNet Programme to provide broadband connectivity to  2,50,000 gram panchayats throughout India, Bharat Broadband Nigam Limited (BBNL) and Telecommunications Consultants India Ltd. (TCIL) selected Hughes India to provide high-speed satellite connectivity to 5,000 remote gram panchayats. Hughes Communications India (HCI) will enable Internet service for each gram panchayat using capacity from ISRO’s GSAT-19 and GSAT-11 satellites with the Hughes JUPITER System. The BharatNet network being created by BBNL aims to provide affordable high-speed broadband access to rural citizens and institutions of all the Gram Panchayats of the country.

 

RAISE 2020
On 5 October 2020, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated ‘RAISE 2020’ a Mega Virtual Summit on Artificial Intelligence (AI).  RAISE (Responsible AI for Social Empowerment (RAISE 2020) summit was organized by the Government of India in partnership with Industry and Academia.)  It is a global meeting of minds to exchange ideas and chart a course for using AI for social transformation, inclusion and empowerment in areas like Healthcare, Agriculture, Education and Smart Mobility, among other sectors. The summit aims to highlight India’s vision and the potential roadmap of using AI.
