India - EU Summit


India-European Union virtual summit was held on 15 July 2020. India was represented by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. 
The summit adopted the "India-EU Strategic Partnership: A Roadmap to 2025” to guide cooperation between India and the EU over the next five years. They welcomed the signing of the India-EURATOM (EUROPEAN ATOMIC. ENERGY COMMUNITY) agreement on research and development cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy.
The leaders agreed to establish a regular High-Level Dialogue at ministerial level to provide guidance to the bilateral trade and investment relations and to address multilateral issues of mutual interest.
The summit welcomed the ongoing activity in India of the European Investment Bank and the upcoming planned investments of 550 million Euros in the Metro Rail Projects of Pune and Bhopal.

 

 India and Israel signed MOU


As global lockdown increased digitalization recently, India and Israel signed an agreement to further expand their collaboration in dealing with cyber threats. 
The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT), a unit of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, and Israel’s National Cyber Directorate (INCD).
The agreement lays down the framework for dialogue, cooperation in capacity building, mutual exchange of best practices in the field and facilitates regular exchanges.


Virtual meet on Climate Action


The Fourth edition of the virtual Ministerial on Climate Action was held  on July 18, India highlighted the need for cleaner fuel. India represented by the Union Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar. 
He said that India leapfrogged from Bharat Stage-IV (BS-IV) to Bharat Stage-VI (BS-VI) emission norms by April 1, 2020, which was earlier to be adopted by 2024.
The meeting was co-chaired by European Union, China and Canada to advance discussions on the full implementation of the Paris Agreement under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and to demonstrate continued political commitment to global climate action.
India stand on achieving a reduction of 21 percent in emission intensity of its GDP between 2005 and 2014, thereby achieving its pre-2020 voluntary target.


WHO Indipendent Panel


World Health Organization (WHO) set up an independent panel to review its handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and the response by governments.
Former New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark and former Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf will head the panel. The panel will provide an interim report to an annual meeting of health ministers in November 2020 and submit a substantive report in May 2021.


 ADB appointed Ashok Lavasa 


Ashok Lavasa, the Election Commissioner of India was appointed as vice president for Private Sector Operations and Public - Private Partnerships at the Asian Development Bank. The ADB statement said Lavasa succeeds Diwakar Gupta whose term ends on 31 August.
Lavasa, a retired IAS officer, was appointed as election commissioner in January 2018 said that his concern is to have a system of disposal of Model Code of Conduct (MCC) violation cases in a time-bound, transparent, and non-discriminatory manner.


ECOSOC Session


Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the High-Level Segment of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Session, 2020 via video conference on 17 July 2020.
The theme of this year’s High-level Segment is "Multilateralism after COVID19: What kind of UN do we need at the 75th anniversary”.
India firmly believes that the path to achieving sustainable peace and prosperity is through multilateralism. PM said ‘Our motto is 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikaas, Sabka Vishwas' - meaning 'Together, for everyone's growth, with everyone's trust', sounds the core Sustainable Development Goal principle of leaving no one behind.
He hailed India’s health care system in dealing with, and containing the spread of Covid-19, credited the grass-root health system in helping the country ensure one of the best recovery rates in the world. 
He narrated many schemes introduced by his government to attain the Sustainable Development goals and how India actively supported the UNO’s development work.

NISHTHA


First online NISHTHA programme for 1200 Key Resources Persons of Andhra Pradesh was launched by Union HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank' on 16 July 2020 virtually.
National Initiative for School Heads’ and Teachers’ Holistic Advancement (NISHTHA) is a flagship programme to improve learning outcomes. 
NISHTHA in face-to-face mode was launched on 21st August 2019. Around 23,000 Key Resource Persons and 17.5 lakh teachers and school heads have been covered under this scheme. The sudden lockdown grossly affected the conduct of this programme in face-to-face mode. Therefore, for providing training to the remaining 24 lakh teachers and school heads, NISHTHA has been customized for online mode.

 

Aerospace and Defence Manufacturing Technologies Conference


Fifth Edition of the Conference on Aerospace and Defence Manufacturing Technologies in New Delhi  inaugurated by Union Minister of State for Defence Shripad Naik.
The theme of the conference is Empowering India with ‘Aatma Nirbhar Bharat Mission’. 
He reminded that the objective of the Defence Production Policy (DPP) is achieving $ 26 Billion domestic production by 2025 and making India self-Reliant in Defence Production. 

 

Google boost digitalization


Google announced an investment of Rs.75,000 crore or approximately $ 10 billion in India through ‘Google for India Digitisation Fund’ to accelerate the country's digital economy.
Sundar Pichai, the Google CEO while addressing the sixth annual edition of the "Google for India" virtual event said that the fund would be used over the next five to seven years through equity investments and tie-ups.

 

India's first e-Lok Adalat


Chhattisgarh organized India's first e-Lok Adalat on 11 July 2020. Under the e-Lok Adalat, the virtual hearings of the pending cases were conducted through video conferencing. 
e-Lok Adalat is a noble initiative to bring relief to people and to reduce the pendency. Over 3 thousand cases will be heard in more than 200 benches of various districts across the state including the high court in Bilaspur.

 

ASEEM Portal 


Union Minister of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Dr Mahendra Nath Pandey launched Aatamanirbhar Skilled Employee-Employer Mapping (ASEEM) portal on 10 July, to help skilled people to find sustainable livelihood opportunities.
National Skill Development Corporation developed the ASEEM portal. It will provide the data to employers to assess the availability of a skilled workforce. It will map details of workers based on regions and local industry demands and will bridge the demand-supply gap of skilled workforce across sectors. This Artificial Intelligence-based platform will be used as a match-making engine to map skilled workers with the jobs available.

Malala Day


Every year Malala Day commemorated on 12 July, on the eve of the birthday of Malala Yousafzai, to honour women and children’s rights around the world. In 2012, she was attacked by Terrorists as she publicly advocated for the education of girls. She founded the Malala Fund, a non-profit organisation to help young girls go to school and also co-authored a book titled ‘I Am Malala.’ In December 2014, she became the youngest-ever Nobel Peace Prize laureate, in recognition of her efforts for children’s rights.
 

Youth Olympics postponed


The International Olympic Committee (IOC) postponed the 2022 Dakar Youth Olympics for four years to 2026, due to the coronavirus pandemic. Dakar is the capital of Senegal in Africa. Though, the news disappointing for many young athletes, IOC President Thomas Bach said that the postponement meets the requirement of responsibility and the concern for efficiency imposed by current circumstances.
 

World Youth Skills Day


World Youth Skills Day globally celebrated on 15th July to highlight the importance of equipping young people with skills to provide opportunities for employment and entrepreneurship. The theme of the 2020 Youth Skills Day virtual event is “Skills for a Resilient Youth”.  PM Modi addressed the digital conclave on this occasion.  He said that it is very important to stay relevant in the current time so that people can not only earn their livelihoods but also help others too. He also said, “The mantra to stay relevant is: Skill, re-skill and upskill.”
