ARTICLES

A, An, The లను Articles అంటారు. వీటినే Demonstrative Adjectives అనీ అంటారు.


A, An లను Indefinite Articles అంటారు. ఎందుకంటే, ఇవి నిర్దిష్ట వ్యక్తినిగాని వస్తువునుగాని సూచించవు.

 

e.g.: boy came for you this morning
('some boy'
ఎవరో ఒక బాలుడు)
'Theని Definite Article అంటారు. ఎందుకంటే ఇది నిర్దిష్ట వ్యక్తినిగాని, వస్తువునుగాని సూచిస్తుంది.
The boy who is sitting next to you is my son
('The boy' ఒక నిర్దిష్ట బాలుడు)
A, An లను సాధారణంగా లెక్కించదగిన సాధారణ నామవాచకాల (Singular countable common nouns)
ముందు ఉపయోగిస్తారు.
'The' ని Singular, Plural, Countable, Uncountable nouns ముందు కూడా ఉపయోగించవచ్చు.
A, An లను సాధారణంగా ఏదైనా (any)/ ఒక (one) అనే అర్థంలో ఉపయోగిస్తారు.
'The' ని 'that' అనే అర్థంలో ఉపయోగిస్తారు.

 

e.g.: dog bit him yesterday. (Some dog)
The dog that bit him yesterday was a mad dog. (That dog)
The difference between A and An.
'An' is used before a word beginning with a owel sound. A is used before a word beginning
with a consonant sound.

అచ్చు శబ్దాలతో ప్రారంభమయ్యే పదాల ముందు 'An', హల్లు శబ్దాలతో ప్రారంభమయ్యే పదాల ముందు 'A'
ఉపయోగించాలి.

Important Notes:
 

1. ఏదైనా పదం 'h' తో ప్రారంభమై ఆ 'h' గనుక silent అయితే ఆ పదం ముందు 'an' ఉపయోగించాలి.
e.g.: an hour - an honest - an honourable

 

2. ఏదైనా పదం 'u' తోగాని 'eu' తోగాని ప్రారంభమై యూ (yoo) అనే శబ్దాన్నిగాని; 'o' తో ప్రారంభమై
'వ' (va) అనే శబ్దాన్నిగాని ఇస్తే దానిముందు 'A' అనే article ఉపయోగించాలి.
e.g.:   a university                            a one rupee
                (యూ)                                   (వ)
           a European                         a one-eyed man
                (యూ)                                (వ) 
            a useful                             a one man show
                (యూ)                                 (వ)

 

3. అచ్చు శబ్దాలతో ప్రారంభమయ్యే abbreviations ముందు 'an' ఉపయోగించాలి.
            an M.L.A.   (ఎం)                                   an R.M.P.  (ఆర్) 
            an S.I.        (ఎస్)                                    an N.C.C.  (ఎన్)

 

The use of A/ An
 

1. In the sense of a certain ('ఏదో ఒక' అనే అర్థంతో) 
 A man come to meet my dad yesterday.
One day a beggar came to my door.

 

2. In the numerical sense of 'one' ('ఒక' అనే అర్థంలో)
   Twelve inches make a foot.
    Not a word was said.
     She needs a one hundred rupee note.

 

3. To represent a class (ఒక వర్గాన్ని తెలియజేయడానికి) 
    A dog is a faithful animal (A dog means all dogs)
    A pupil should obey his teacher (A pupil means all pupil)

 

4. In the sense of every/ at the rate of (ప్రతి/ చొప్పున అనే అర్థాలతో)
     He earns Rs.1000/- a month
     I bought oranges at Rs.50 a dozen

5. in exclamatory sentences (ఆశ్చర్యార్థక వాక్యాలలో)
    What a lovely girl she is!
     What an excellent idea!

 

6. Before the name of a profession/ trade/ occupation (వృత్తి, వ్యాపారాల ముందు) 
     She is a teacher
     He is a business man

 

Use of the definite article 'The'.
 

Rule No.1: When we speak of a particular person/ thing (నిర్దిష్ట వ్యక్తి గురించిగాని వస్తువు గురించిగాని మాట్లాడేటప్పుడు)
e.g.: Please call the man who is waiting out side
Turn off the tap, you are wasting water.

 

Rule No.2: Before unique things (ఒకే ఒక్కటి ఉండేవి) 
    e.g.:             The sun            The earth                 The Moon
                          The sky             The World

 

Rule No.3: Before the names of rivers, seas, oceans, mountain ranges, group of islands, deserts. (నదులు, సముద్రాలు, మహాసముద్రాలు, పర్వత పంక్తులు, దీవుల సముదాయం, ఎడారుల పేర్ల ముందు)
e.g.: The Godavari,                    The Krishna
           The Bay of Bengal            The Red Sea
           The Pacific ocean              The Atlantic Ocean
           The Himalayas                   The Vindhyas
           The Maldives                      The Indonesia
           The Sahara                          The Thaar

 

Rule No.4: Before the names of religious and popular books (మతపరమైన, ప్రఖ్యాత రచనల పేర్ల ముందు)
            The Ramayana                         The Bible
             The Wings of Fire                   The Discovery of India

 

Rule No.5: Before the names of historical and public buildings (చారిత్రక ప్రాధాన్యమున్న, ప్రజా సంబంధ కట్టడాలు, భవంతుల పేర్ల ముందు)
             The Tajmahal                       The Assembly
             The Charminar                     The Parliament
              The Red fort                         The High court

 

Rule No.6: Before the names of trains, aeroplanes, ships, newspapers, magazines, etc. (రైళ్ళు, విమానాలు, ఓడలు, వార్తాపత్రికలు మొదలైన వాటి పేర్ల ముందు) 
              The Narayanadri Express
              The Indian Airlines            The Titanic  
               The Hindu                           The India Today

 

Rule No.7: Before the names of inventions (ఆవిష్కరణల పేర్ల ముందు)
The Computer                      The Television

 

Rule No.8: Before the names of important events in history (చరిత్రలో ప్రధాన సంఘటనల పేర్ల ముందు)
               The Quit India Movement
                 The First World War

 

Rule No.9: Before an adjective in superlative degree (Superlative degree లో విశేషణం
ముందు)
India is the greatest country in the world.
The rose is the most beautiful flower

 

Rule No.10: Before an adjective in double comparative degree
The higher you climb, the better the view
The more you work, the more you get

 

Rule No.11: Before adjectives used as nouns (విశేషణాలను నామవాచకాలుగా వాడినప్పుడు)
The rich should help the poor
There is a school for the blind in our town.

 

Rule No.12: Before the names of Musical Instruments (సంగీత వాద్య పరికరాల ముందు)
The violin,          The Piano,                 The Flute

 

Rule No. 13: Before the persons/ things which are already referred to in the same context  (ఇదివరకే ప్రస్తావించిన వ్యక్తుల, వస్తువుల పేర్ల ముందు)
e.g.: I saw a boy and a girl on an ass. The boy was sitting behind the girl on the ass.

 

Rule No.14: Before ordinal numbers (First, Second, Third .... లాంటి Ordinal numbers ముందు)
He won the first prize
She got the fifth rank in EAMCET

 

Rule No.15: Before the name of a nation/ race/ community (జాతి, మత, తెగల పేర్ల ముందు)
The Indian          The Hindus            The Muslims

 

Rule No.16: When a single noun is used to represent the whole class, the is used before it (ఒక మొత్తం సమూహాన్ని సూచించడానికి ఒక ఏక వచన నామవాచకాన్ని ఉపయోగించినప్పుడు దానిముందు The  ఉపయోగిస్తారు)
The peacock is a beautiful bird
The lion is a ferocious animal

 

OMISSION OF ARTICLES
 

Rule No 1: No article is used before the names of persons and places (Proper nouns)( వ్యక్తులు, స్థలాల పేర్ల ముందు Article వాడకూడదు.) 
                  × Abdulkalam     × Hyderabad
Note: If a proper noun is used in the sense common noun, the can be used before it.

(ఒక వ్యక్తిని మరొక వ్యక్తితోగాని, ఒక స్థలాన్ని మరొక స్థలంతోగాని పోల్చినప్పుడు The ని ఉపయోగించవచ్చు.)
Kalidasa is the Shakespeare of India
Araku is the Ooty of A.P

 

Rule No 2: No article is used before material nouns ( Gold, Silver, Water, Oil etc) and abstract nouns (Knowledge, wisdom, honesty etc) are used in general sense. However 'the' can be used when they are used in particular sense (Material nouns, abstract nouns ని సాధారణ అర్థంలో ఉపయోగించినప్పుడు article ఉపయోగించరాదు. కాని ప్రత్యేక అర్థంలో ఉపయోగించినప్పుడు The ని ఉపయోగించవచ్చు.)
e.g.: 1.  ×  --- water is essential for all living beings
2. Don't drink the water in that pot, it is very dirty.
3.  × --- wisdom is a great virtue
4. The wisdom of Mahatma Gandhi is praise worthy

 

Rule No 3: No article is used before the names of games, meals, days, months, seasons, languages.
e.g.: 1.  × --- Cricket is a popular game
        2.  × --- lunch is ready
        3.  × --- spring is a beautiful season
        4.  × --- English is a global language
        5.  × --- Sunday is a holiday

 

Rule No 4: No article is used before the places like school, college, university, temple, church, hospital, prison etc when they are used for primary purpose, however 'the' can be used when they are used for any other purpose (School, College, Temple, Hospital లాంటి స్థలాలను ప్రధాన ఉద్దేశం కోసం ఉపయోగించినప్పుడు article వాడకూడదు. వేరే ఉద్దేశం కోసం ఉపయోగించినప్పుడు The ని వాడవచ్చు.)
e.g.:  Raju goes to -- × --college daily (Primary Purpose)
         Raju's father went to the college yesterday to pay the fee
         I went to -- × -- hospital yesterday
         I will go to the hospital tonight to see my friend.

 

Illustrative Example:
 

1. I met ----- European yesterday.
1) a      2) an      3) the         4) No article is required
Ans: 1. Explanation:
ఏ యూరోపియనో తెలియదు కాబట్టి Indefinite articles a / an ఉపయోగించాలి. ఇచ్చిన పదం హల్లు శబ్దం (యూ)తో ప్రారంభమవుతోంది కాబట్టి A ఉపయోగించాలి.

 

2. My grandfather always carries ----- umbrella
1) a      2) an        3) the        4) No article is required
Ans: 2. Explanation: \ umbrella
నో తెలియదు కాబట్టి Indefinite article A / An ఉపయోగించాలి. Umbrella అనే పదం 'అం' అనే అచ్చు శబ్దంతో ప్రారంభమవుతోంది కాబట్టి An సమాధానమవుతుంది.

 

3. ----- Ganga is a holy river
1) a       2) an           3) the         4) No article is required
Ans: 3. Explanation:
ఇక్కడ 'గంగానది' అనే నది definite. అంటే మనం ఇక్కడ ఏ నది గురించి చెబుతున్నామో అందరికి తెలుసు కాబట్టి The ని ఉపయోగించాలి

 

4. ----- gold is a precious metal
1) a         2) an          3) the           4) No article is required
Ans: 4. Explanation:
ఇక్కడ gold అన్నది material noun అవుతుంది Material nouns ని general sense లో ఉపయోగించినప్పుడు article రాకూడదని నేర్చుకున్నాం. కాబట్టి '4 మాత్రమే సరైన సమాధానం అవుతుంది.
