Phrasal Verbs

Definition: A phrase (such as take off or look down on) that combines a verb with a preposition or adverb or both and that functions as a verb whose meaning is different from the combined meanings of the individual words. “Phrasal verb” is a vast topic and aspirants  find difficulty in mugging up all the Phrasal Verbs. A lot of questions based on Phrasal Verbs are asked in SSC CGL & CHSL Exams.

7. Cut out: remove or make something by separatingit from something larger with a sharp implement. Thus, the correct sentence is ‘Arjun cut out a piece of the cake and put it on my plate’.

8. Cut up: very distressed.Thus, the correct sentence is ‘Rani was cut up because she had been scolded by her teacher’.

9. Drop Out: To stop doing something before you have completely finished. Thus, the correct sentence is ‘Srikanth could not qualify for the selection as he dropped out while the race was in progress’.

14. Set up: Establish a business or institution. Thus, the correct sentence is ‘The company was set up by his father’.
