MANODARPAN


MANODARPAN, the initiative of Human Resources Development (HRD) Ministry to provide psycho-social support to students was launched in New Delhi.
Union HRD Minister, Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank' on this occasion said that 'MANODARPAN' covers a wide range of activities to provide Psycho-social Support to students for their Mental Health and Well-being during the COVID outbreak and beyond.
The National Toll-free helpline (8448440632) also been set up, which shall be managed by a pool of experienced counselors/ Psychologists and other mental health professionals and will continue beyond the COVID-19 situation. Through this helpline, tele-counselling will be provided to the students to address their mental health and psychosocial issues.

RIL in Top 50 Most Valued Firms


Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) became the first Indian firm to touch the Rs. 13 lakh crore market capitalisation (m-cap) mark. RIL ranked 48th in market cap globally, according to stock market data. No Indian company has ever crossed an m-cap of Rs. 13 lakh crore.  Globally, Saudi Aramco is the company with the highest market cap of $ 1.7 trillion, followed by Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, and Alphabet. The only other Indian company in the top 100 firms is Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has an m-cap of Rs 8.14 lakh crore.


Private Trains in Railways


Indian railways decided to allow private entities to operate passenger trains to roll out 151 modern passenger trains on 109 pairs of routes across the country by 2027. 
First, it will introduce 12 trains in 2022-23, 45 in 2023-24, 50 in 2025-26 and 44 more in 2026-27, taking the total number of trains to 151 by the end of FY 2026-27. The Request For Qualification (RFQ) is likely to be finalized by November 2020. 70% of the private trains will be manufactured in India which will be designed for a maximum speed of 160 kmph.

 

60% renewable energy by 2030


The Energy Resource Institute (TERI) conducted a webinar on 21 July. Union Power and New and Renewable Energy Minister R K Singh said that India will have around 60% of its installed electricity generation capacity from clean sources by 2030. 
He said,  the renewable energy capacity would touch 510 GW by 2030, including 60 GW of hydropower. The minister  also launched a report titled 'Bending the Curve: 2025 Forecasts for Electricity Demand by Sector and State in the Light of the COVID Epidemic'.

 

Permanent Women Commission


Union Ministry of Defence issued a formal sanction letter to grant permanent commission to women officers in the Indian Army.  
Earlier this year, the Supreme Court allowed permanent commission and command roles to women officers. The reasons like motherhood, physiological limitation, childcare and troops from rural backgrounds not to accept a permanent commission for women, but the Supreme Court said there was a need for an administrative will and 'change of mindset'.

 

Kakrapar Plant achievement


Kakrapar Atomic Power Plant, Unit-3 (KAPP-3), India’s first 700 MWe (megawatt electric) pressurized Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR) attained criticality on 22 July 2020.  
The reactor is the first of its kind as this 700 MWe Pressurized Heavy Water Reactor was indigenously designed and built by Indian scientists and engineers.

 

Dhruvastra


On 22 July 2020, India successfully conducted three flight tests of its indigenously developed anti-tank guided missile ''Dhruvastra'' from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur in Odisha. 
The missile developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) which is the helicopter-launched anti-tank guided missile (ATGM). It is one of the most advanced anti-tank weapons in the world. Dhruvastra is the helicopter version of 'Nag Helina' with several new features and meant to be fired from air to destroy enemy bunkers, armoured vehicles and main battle tanks.

 

National Transit Pass System


On 23 July 2020, the National Transit Pass System (NTPS) was launched by Union Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar.  This pilot project will be functional in Madhya Pradesh and Telangana and by this Diwali it will be operational in pan India. NTPS enhances the seamless movement of forest produce. It will replace manual paper-based transit system by online transit system enabling ease of movement of timber, bamboo and other minor forest produce.

G20 Digital meet


The G20 virtual Digital Economy Ministers was hosted by Saudi Arabia on 22 July 2020.
Union Information Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad participated in the meet and said that digital platforms need to be responsive, accountable, and sensitive to the concerns of sovereign nations as far as safety, defence and privacy are concerned.

 

Indo-US Strategic Energy Partnership


The Virtual ministerial meeting of the U.S-India Strategic Energy Partnership
(SEP) was held on 17 July 2020. The energy cooperation between the two countries, which is technical, economic, and bilateral, is strengthening year after year.
 Smart grids and energy storage is being implemented by a consortium comprising of 30 Indian and US entities is also another important point discussed in the meet.
The meeting was co-chaired by U.S. Secretary of Energy Dan Brouillette and Indian Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas and of Steel Dharmendra Pradhan.

 

G20 FM and Central Bank Governors Meet


G20 finance ministers and central bank governors virtual meeting was held under the Saudi Arabia presidency on July 19. The Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman participated in the meet.  
Moody’s Investors Service and Fitch Ratings recently lowered India’s rating to lowest investment grade.  

 

Emergency Medical Services Unit


The Government of India signed an agreement with the Ministry of Health of Maldives for the establishment of 'Emergency Medical Services Unit' at Baa Atoll Dharavandhoo Hospital in Male. 
The establishment of an Emergency Medical Services unit in Maldives is one of the several small and medium projects that are being financed by India under the overarching grant assistance of around $ 20 million.

 

Virtual India Ideas Summit 2020


US-India Business Council (USIBC) hosted the virtual India Ideas Summit 2020 on July 22. 
The Theme of the summit is “Building a Better Future”. The year 2020 marked the 45th anniversary of the formation of the Council. 
During the summit, the discussion was held on areas including India-US cooperation and the future of the relation between the two countries in a postpandemic world.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on this eve urged American investors to invest in India in sectors such as technology, healthcare, insurance, civil aviation, defence and infrastructure.

Greek philanthropist Marianna Vardinoyannis and Morissana Kouyate of Guinea were conferred with Nelson Mandela Prize. United Nations General Assembly President Tijjani Muhammad - Bande hailed the greatness of Vardinoyannis, who has been involved for around 30 years in the fight against childhood cancer. She is a Goodwill Ambassador of UNESCO since 1999. Dr. Morissanda Kouyate of Guinea is a leading advocate on ending violence against women and girls in Africa. 
 

National Broadcasting Day


National Broadcasting Day observed on 23 July. On this day in 1927, the first- ever radio broadcast in the country went on air from the Bombay Station under a private company, the Indian Broadcasting Company.  Broadcasting has played a very crucial role over the decades. 


Gulbenkian prize for humanity


Gulbenkian prize for humanity was conferred on the Climate activist Greta
Thunberg for the way 'she has been able to mobilise younger generations'. She donated the entire cash prize of one million euros to different organisations and projects, who are working to help people on the front line, affected by the climate crisis and ecological crisis. Gulbenkian Prize for Humanity, awarded annually, in the amount of 1 million euros, aims to recognise people, groups of people and/or organisations from all over the world whose contributions to mitigation and adaptation to climate change stand out for its novelty, innovation and impact.
