ఒకే రకంగా ఉండి తికమక పెట్టే పదాలు ఆంగ్లభాషలో చాలా ఉన్నాయి. అలాంటి జంట పదాల్లో కొన్నిటిని గురించి ఉదాహరణల సాయంతో నేర్చుకుందాం!
Sankar: See how the waves are rushing towards the shore! I think it is because the day after tomorrow is a full moon day (చూడు, ఆ అలలు ఎంత వేగంగా తీరంవైపు వస్తున్నాయో! ఎల్లుండి పౌర్ణమి అవడంవల్ల అనుకుంటా).
Bharath: Obviously. The sea is on the high tide on the full moon day and the waves rise very high (అంతే కదా. పౌర్ణమి రోజున సముద్రపుటలలు ఉవ్వెత్తున లేస్తాయి).
Sankar: Look, some one from a distance is waving at you. Is that someone you know? (చూడు, ఎవరో దూరం నుంచి నీకు చేయి వూపుతున్నారు. నీకు తెలిసిన వాళ్లేమన్నానా?)
Bharath: How poor your eye sight is! You know him as well as I do. It is Ravindra (నీ దృష్టి అంత తక్కువగా ఉందేంటి? అతను నాకెంత తెలుసో నీకూ అంతే తెలుసు. అతను రవీంద్ర కదా?)
Sankar: Yes. He is (అవును. అతనే).
Bharath: Certainly a good sort. When we didn't have enough money to pay those charges he got them waived by talking to his officer (నిజంగా మంచివాడు. మనం ఏదో కట్టాల్సిన డబ్బు మన దగ్గర లేనపుడు, తన పైఅధికారితో మాట్లాడి మనకా చార్జీలను మినహాయింపు చేశాడు).
Sankar: Yea. He took just a verbal assurance from us that we would pay it later and got our job done (అవును. తర్వాత చెల్లిస్తామన్న మన నోటి మాటను హామీగా తీసుకుని మన పని చేయించాడు).
Bharath: The officer was good too, but he was quite verbose. He would use very high sounding words where simple words would do (వాళ్ల అధికారీ మంచివాడే, కానీ ఆయన మాటల పటాటోపం ఎక్కువ. చిన్నచిన్న మాటలతో సులభంగా తెలుపగల భావాన్నీ పెద్దపెద్ద మాటలతో తెలియపరుస్తాడు).
Sankar: Anyway, they did help us. He is coming towards us. Let us meet him(ఏదైతేనేం, ఇద్దరూ సాయం చేశారు. అతను మనవైపు వస్తున్నాడు. వెళ్లి కలుద్దాం పద).
I) i. Wave = అల. ముఖ్యంగా సముద్రపు అల
a) Sivaram: How did you and where did you spend last evening? I tried for you but your phone didn't respond (నిన్న సాయంత్రం ఎక్కడ ఎలా గడిపావు? నీకోసం ప్రయత్నించాను. కానీ నీ ఫోను నుంచి స్పందన లేదు).
Trivikram: I took my uncle to the beach. We spent an hour there watching the waves breaking on the shore (మా మామయ్యను సముద్రతీరానికి తీసుకెళ్లాను. అక్కడ మేమిద్దరం సముద్రపు అలలు తీరం మీద విరుచుకుపడడం చూస్తూ గంటసేపు గడిపాం).
b) Balaji: What was the commotion at the college a few days ago? (ఏంటి, కొద్దిరోజుల క్రితం ఆ కళాశాలలో గొడవ?)
Doraswamy: That was a wave of protests by the students against the steep increase in the fees (అది కళాశాల ఫీజు విపరీతంగా పెంచినందుకు వ్యతిరేకంగా ఉవ్వెత్తున లేచిన నిరసన అల).
ఉన్నట్టుండి పెద్దఎత్తున లేచే భావం కానీ, చర్యను కానీ Wave అని అంటాం.
* Wave of opposition = ఉవ్వెత్తున లేచిన వ్యతిరేకత
* A wave of violence = హింసాకాండ, wave of crime = నేరాల సంఖ్య తీవ్రంగా ఒక్క ఉదుటన పెరగడం
*Wave of protests = నిరసన అల
* a wave of panic = విపరీతమైన భయం ఒక్క ఉదుటున పెరగడం
* Heat wave = (వేడి/ వడగాల్పులు)
wave కు ఇంకో అర్థం - వూపటం, చేయి, జెండా లాంటివి
ii. Waive = Not to insist on a condition/ a rule = (షరతును గానీ/ నిబంధనను గానీ మినహాయించడం/ మినహాయింపు ఇవ్వడం)
a) Subodh: He is just thirteen years old. How did they allow him to take the exam? Isn't he under aged? (అతనికి పదమూడేళ్లే కదా? పరీక్షకు ఎలా హాజరవనిచ్చారు? వయసు తక్కువ కదా?)
Surya: In view of his extraordinary brilliance they have waived the age rule in his case (అతని అసాధారణ తెలివితేటలను దృష్టిలో ఉంచుకుని అతణ్ణి వయసు నిబంధన నుంచి మినహాయించారు).
b) Bhagavan: That's (that is) really a wonderful movie. It certainly is quality entertainment with a message too (అది చాలా గొప్ప చిత్రం. మంచి విలువలున్న వినోదం, సందేశంతో)
Kesari: You are right. I hope the government will waive the entertainment tax for the movie (నువ్వు సరిగ్గా చెప్పావు. ప్రభుత్వం దాన్ని వినోదం పన్ను నించి మినహాయిస్తుందని ఆశిస్తున్నా).
* Waive = Exempt from
II) i. Verbal: connected with words (మాటలకు సంబంధించిన/ మాటలకు మాత్రమే పరిమితమైన, అంటే రాతకోతలు లేకుండా)
eg: Verbal assurance = An assurance/ a promise given orally (by word of mouth and not in writing) = నోటి మాటతో ఇచ్చే హామీ/ నోటి మాటల వాగ్దానం, రాతకోతల రూపంలో కాకుండా)
a) Mahendra: Oh, things did not go as I had planned. You didn't do things the way I had told you (నేను వూహించిన విధంగా/ నా ప్రణాళిక ప్రకారం జరగలేదేదీ. నేను చెప్పిన విధంగా నువ్వు చేయలేదు).
Sheriff: The whole trouble is due to your giving us verbal instructions. If only you had put them down on paper we would have done a good job of it (ఈ ఇబ్బందంతా నువ్వు నోటి మాటల ద్వారా మాకు సూచనలివ్వడం వల్ల వచ్చింది. అదే నువ్వు రాతలో ఇచ్చి ఉంటే మేం సరిగానే చేసుండేవాళ్లం).
b) Dilip: Are you sure he will keep to his part of the agreement? You have only a verbal agreement (అతను తనవంతు ఒప్పందాన్ని అమలు చేస్తాడంటావా? మీ మధ్య ఉన్నది నోటి మాట ఒప్పందమే కానీ, పత్రాలేం లేవు కదా?)
Asad: Don't worry. I have never known him go against his word with him an oral agreement is as good as a written one (ఏం భయపడకు. అతనెపుడూ మాట తప్పినట్టు నేనెరుగను. అతని విషయంలో అతని నోటి మాటకు, రాతపత్రం అంత విలువ ఉంది).
ii. Verbose = రాతలో/ మాటల్లో చిన్న మాటల్తో భావాన్ని తెలిపేందుకు బదులు పెద్దపెద్ద మాటలు ఎక్కువగా వాడి మన పాండిత్యం చూపించుకోవడం
(using more words than are necessary and also high sounding words)
a) Vinod: The party cannot get votes through his speeches (ఆయన ఉపన్యాసాల వల్ల పార్టీకి ఓట్లు పడవు).
Pandit: You are right. He is verbose and people don't have the patience to listen to him (నువ్వన్నది నిజమే. అతని మాట దడబడ ఎక్కువవడంతో జనానికి అతని ఉపన్యాసం వినే ఓపిక ఉండదు).
b) Rameswar: He has written a number of books, hasn't he? But he appears to have made little money (అతను చాలా పుస్తకాలు రాశాడు కదా? కానీ అంత డబ్బు చేసుకున్నట్టు లేడు).
Dayakar: How can he? His writing is verbose and the readers don't find them interesting (ఎలా చేసుకోగలడు? ఆయన రచనల్లో మాటల దడబడ ఎక్కువ. కొద్దిమాటలు వాడగలిగినచోట ఎక్కువ మాటలు వాడడంతో పాఠకులకు అంత ఆసక్తి ఉండదు)
