VidyaDaan 2.0


    Union Human Resource Development Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ launched VidyaDaan 2.0 program on DIKSHA platform for inviting e-learning Content contributions.
    The programme has been launched due to the increasing requirement for e-learning content for  students(both school and higher education) especially  in the  backdrop of situation arising out of Covid- 19 and also due to  the urgent need to integrate digital education with schooling to encourage learning.
    He also informed that VidyaDaan has a content contribution tool that provides a structured interface for the contributors to register and contribute different types of content (such as, explanation videos, presentations, competency-based items, quizzes etc.), for any grade (from grade 1 to 12), for any subject as specified by the states/UTs.
    The Minister said that VidyaDaan program shall soon be inviting contributions for teacher training material also.


Special Liquidity Facility for Mutual Funds


    On 27 April 2020, Reserve Bank of India announced a Special Liquidity Facility for Mutual Funds (SLF-MF) of Rs.50,000 crore rupees with a view to easing liquidity pressures on Mutual Funds.
    In a bid to address concerns arising out of Franklin Templeton’s decision to wind up six debt funds, the Reserve Bank of India took this decision. Under the Special Liquidity Facility for Mutual Funds (SLF-MF), the RBI shall conduct repo operations of 90 days tenor at the fixed repo rate.
    The SLF-MF is on-tap and open-ended and banks can submit their bids to avail funding on any day from Monday to Friday (excluding holidays). The scheme is available from today till 11th of May or up to utilization of the allocated amount, whichever is earlier.
    The RBI stated that it remains vigilant and will take whatever steps are necessary to mitigate the economic impact of COVID-19 and preserve financial stability.


'Mann Ki Baat'


    On 26 April 2020, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation via his radio broadcast programme 'Mann Ki Baat'.    
    “Fight against coronavirus is people-driven. This fight is being fought by the people and the administration together” he said. He highlighted the contribution of frontline corona warriors and the state governments in the fight against Covid-19. He appealed people to follow hygienic norms such as wearing masks and avoiding spitting in public places. 
    Wearing mask has to become a habit and it does not mean a person wearing it is unwell, it is just wise precaution. ‘Do Gaz Doori, Bohot hai Zaroori,’ he gives slogan to make people aware of social distancing.


'#MyBookMyFriend'


    '#MyBookMyFriend' campaign was launched by Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, the HRD Minister on World Book Day in Twitter. World Book and Copyright Day celebrated every year on 23 April. He said that there could not be a better friend, a better strength, better motivator, and a better guide than books. 
    “Books stand by our side and support us like a rock in all phases and difficulties of our life”. “Books are the real wealth that stays with us” he added.
    He then requested that students should keep reading books other than their textbooks and try to read at least 3-4 books in a year. He also urged everyone else, who may not be a student to find time to read a book. 


e-Gramswaraj Portal and Swamitva Launched


    On the occasion of National Panchayati Raj Day on 24 April 2020, the Prime Minister Narender Modi launched the e-Gramswaraj Portal and Mobile app as to prepare and plan Gram Panchayat Development Plans. He said that the portal will ensure real time monitoring and accountability. The portal is a major step towards digitization down to the Gram Panchayat level. PM Modi also launched Swamitva scheme in pilot mode to map rural inhabited lands using drones and latest survey methods. This scheme will ensure streamlined planning, revenue collection and provide clarity over property rights in rural areas. Disputes related to property would also be settled through the title deeds allotted through this scheme.
    He also interacted with Panchayat representatives from across the country. During his interaction with the sarpanchs PM complimented the villages for giving the mantra - 'Do gaj doori' to define social distancing in simpler terms to kill COVID pandemic.


International

COVID deaths more than 2 lakh 


    Coronavirus pandemic claimed more than 2 lakh deaths worldwide ,nearly 90% of which were in USA and Europe alone  by 26 April 2020. However, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned that recovery from coronavirus might not protect a person from re-infection. It clarified that there is currently no evidence that people who have recovered from COVID-19 and have antibodies are protected from a second infection.


Test Kit at Home 


    U.S.A Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first at-home COVID-19 test kit, which is expected to bring coronavirus testing to the doorsteps of every household.
    The first at-home test kit has been developed by LabCorp, where as the patient can perform the self-swab and then mail it back and get the results after that time all under the guidance of a licensed physician, after completing a COVID-19 questionnaire. In United States, the death toll due to the coronavirus pandemic crossed the 50,000-mark by 25 April 2020, according to Johns Hopkins University.


Human Trials by Oxford University


    Coronavirus vaccine human trials started in the UK,  developed by a group of scientists at the University of Oxford on 23 April 2020.
    Elisa Granato is the first volunteer in an initial group of 800 to be part of the ground-breaking trial, which hoped will be the answer for immunization against the deadly COVID 19 By vaccinating with ChAdOx1 nCoV-19, the Oxford University team is hoping to make the body recognise and develop an immune response to the spike protein that will help stop the SARS-CoV-2 or Covid-19 virus from entering human cells and therefore prevent infection.
    The vaccine is made from a harmless chimpanzee virus that has been genetically engineered to carry part of the coronavirus to be tested on volunteers aged between 18 and 55 who are in good health
    The UK government pledged 20 million pounds to support the coronavirus vaccine trial programme


SAARC Conference on COVID 19


    South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) health ministers meeting hosted by Pakistan via video conference to promote greater regional cooperation to deal with the COVID 19 pandemic on 23 April 2020.
    In this virtual meet, India highlighted the successful use and promising future of new and innovative technology-based solutions such as the mobile app ‘Aarogya Setu’ to maximize community outreach and intervention.
    India’s delegation was led by Rajiv Garg, the Director General of health services. India developed an electronic platform, namely ‘SAARC COVID19 Information Exchange Platform (COINEX)’ for use by all SAARC countries.
    The meeting comes over a month after India took the lead with Prime Minister Narendra Modi bringing the SAARC leaders together through a video-conference amid rising coronavirus cases in the populous region. On 15 March 2020, PM Modi proposed COVID-19 emergency fund and India committed $ 10 million initially for the fund.
    SAARC is a regional grouping comprising Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Firouzja Out Carlsen


    16-year-old Iranian chess prodigy Alireza Firouzja won the final of the Banter Blitz Cup by defeating the World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway.
    Firouzja defeated  world chess champ Carlsen in a historic 8.5-7.5 in the final of the online quickfire knockout contest.


Under-17 Women's World Cup Postponed


    FIFA Under-17 Women's World Cup, which was scheduled to be played in India in the month of  November 2020, was postponed due to the Coronavirus pandemic.  FIFA will declare the new dates for the tournament soon.
    Under-17 Women's World Cup was scheduled to be played in India across five host cities - Navi Mumbai, Guwahati, Ahmedabad, Kolkata and Bhubaneswar.

 

World Malaria Day


    World Malaria Day is observed on 25 April every year by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to recognise the global fight against the disease. 
    In 2007 at the 60th session of the World Health Assembly, a meeting sponsored by the World Health Organisation (WHO) proposed that Africa Malaria Day be changed to World Malaria Day.
    This year's theme is "Zero malaria starts with me". The theme focuses on the complete eradication of malaria from the world through effective measures and proper implementation of various healthcare programmes.
    A life-threatening disease, which is caused through the transmission of plasmodium parasite through the bite of female Anopheles mosquito. The disease infects more than 500 million people each year across the globe.
