Tables

A table is a set of data arranged in rows and columns and is one of the most common way of putting information across to people. A table consists of several boxes with information inside. The first row and the first column are generally used to denote the titles.
Tips to solve tables

¤ Read the data very carefully, as the smallest detail may change the meaning of the question completely.

¤ The instructions have to be understood carefully to prevent wasting time in calculating data that is not required, and also to find out exactly what is the answer that is sought.

¤ Try to understand the data provided carefully, before jumping to answer the questions.

¤ Be very careful of the units used in the tables, and the units in which the answers are provided. A mistake in the units may yield an entirely different answer.

¤ Be careful of whether the answer is required in decimal or percentage.

Directions (1-5) Go through the data given in the table below and solve the questions that follow. (IBPS RRB Scale-I 2017)

The table consists of details of students who appeared for 2 subjects, ‘Physics’ and ‘Chemistry’ and the percentage who passed these subjects from a college from the year, 2011 to 2015.

1. What is the average number of students, who appeared for Physics from the year, 2011 to 2015?

1) 420 2) 400 3) 440 4) 480 5) None of these

Ans: 440

2. What is the ratio between the total number of students who appeared for Physics from 2013 to 2015 and the total number of students, who appeared for Chemistry from 2011 to 2013?

1) 13: 33 2) 65: 99 3) 65: 96 4) 62: 99 5) None of these

Ans: 65: 99

Explanation:

Total number of Physics students from 2013 to 2015 = 350+600+350 = 1300

Total number of Chemistry students from 2011 to 2013 = 800+630+550 = 1980

Required ratio = 1300:1980 = 65:99

3. What is the average number of students, who did not pass in Physics in the year 2011 and 2015 together?
1) 560 2) 240 3) 320 4) 280 5) 260
Ans: 280
Explanation:
Number of Physics students who did not pass in 2011 = 70% of 650 = 455
Number of Physics students who did not pass in 2015 = 30% of 350 = 105

 4. What is the difference between the total number of students, who passed in Chemistry in 2011 and the total number of students who did not pass in Physics in 2014?
1) 400 2) 240 3) 160 4) 290 5) None of these
Ans: 160
Explanation:
Number of Chemistry students who passed in 2011 = 50% of 800 = 400
Number of Physics students who did not pass in 2014 = 40% of 600 = 240
... Required difference = 400 - 240160

5. The total number of students, who did not pass Physics in 2013 is approximately what percent of the total number of students, who did not pass Chemistry in 2013?
1) 40% 2) 47% 3) 52% 4) 58% 5) 36%
Ans: 40%
