Error Detection

Error detection is one of the important topics which commonly appears in all major government examinations including the IBPS (Institute of Banking Personnel Selection) examination. It comes under the English language section. In general, 4-5 questions will be asked from this section.

SENTENCE BASED ERROR DETECTION (OLD METHOD)

In this method, a sentence will be given and that will be divided into four different parts A, B, C and D. Candidates has to select the portion of the sentence which contains an error (spelling, grammatical or contextual). If there is no error in the sentence, they have to choose “No error” i.e. option E as their answer.

Directions (Qs. 1 - 5): The given sentence has been divided up into four different parts A, B, C and D. Select the portion of the sentence which contains an error (spelling, grammatical or contextual). If there is no error, choose option E (No error) as your answer.

1. “Ms. Shalini, our representative (A)/ she will attend (B)/ the seminar on our behalf”, (C)/ said our managing director (D)/. No error (E).
Explanation: A subject (here Shalini) cannot be used as a noun and a pronoun in a single sentence. Here, the only noun (Shalini) will attend the seminar. So, the usage of pronoun ‘she’ in the sentence is not necessary.

Ans: B

2. The whole block of (A)/ buildings, including two (B)/ grocery stores, were destroyed (C)/ in the earthquake (D)/. No error (E).
Explanation: The main subject (here ‘block’) in the given sentence is singular. So, singular verb (was) should be used in the sentence.

Ans: C

3. Seldom a nation will decide (A)/ that conflict with a neighbouring (B)/ nation is the only (C)/ resource to gain power (D)/. No error (E).
Explanation: For the sentences starting with the adverbs such as seldom, hardly, never etc. the use of the auxiliary verb is done after using the adverbs at first. ‘Seldom will a nation decide’ is correct here. ‘Seldom have I met with such a typical person’ is another example sentence.

Ans: A

4. I ran so fastly (A)/ that I reached (B)/ my destination in (C)/ just five minutes (D)/. No error (E).
Explanation: The three adjective forms of ‘fast’ are fast – faster – fastest. As the sentence is in positive degree, ‘fast’ should be used in place of fastly. Also, there is no such word like ‘fastly’ in the English vocabulary.

Ans: A

5. The company is in losses (A)/ and has been unable (B)/ to pay their employees (C)/ for the past six months (D)/. No error (E).
Explanation: Here, the subject (“company”) is a singular noun. So, the possessive pronoun used in the sentence should also be singular (its).

Ans: C

Directions (Qs. 6 - 10): In the question, four different sentences (A, B, C, D) are given. There may be a correct statement present out of those four sentences. If all the sentences are incorrect, mark the “All the sentences are incorrect” (E) as your answer.

6. A. There is only one of her performances that are interesting to watch.
B. There is only one of her performances that is interesting to watch.
C. There is only one of her performance that is interesting to watch.
D. There is only one of her performance that are interesting to watch.
E. All the sentences are incorrect
Explanation: ‘Only one’ is a singular subject. So, singular verb (here ‘is’) should be used.

Ans: B

7. A. Either wood or either bricks can be used as a building material for constructing a house.
B. Either wood or bricks can be used as a building material for constructing a house.
C. Either wood and bricks can be used as a building material for constructing a house.
D. Either wood or bricks can be uses as a building material for constructing a house.
E. All the sentences are incorrect
Explanation: ‘Either wood or bricks’ is the correct usage here. Either …… or is an example of correlative coordinators, which generally means that they coordinate parts of a sentence. When we use ‘either’, we are offering the first alternative and when you add the word ‘or’, we are declaring the other choice, or choices.

Ans: B

8. A. Naresh and his brother Harish fell in the well but nobody tried to save them.
B. Naresh and his brother Harish fall into the well but nobody tried to save them.
C. Naresh and his brother Harish fell into the well but nobody tried to save them.
D. Naresh and his brother Harish falls in the well but nobody tried to save them.
E. All the sentences are incorrect
Explanation: The preposition ‘into’ is used to express a movement or action that someone or something becomes enclosed or surrounded by something else. The preposition ‘in’ is used when something is within another thing. A ‘well’ is an enclosed thing. So, ‘fell into’ is the correct usage here.

Ans: C

9. A. My friend has been suffering from jaundice for a week.
B. My friend has been suffering from jaundice since a week.
C. My friend is suffering from jaundice since a week.
D. My friend has suffering from jaundice for a week.
E. All the sentences are incorrect
Explanation: We use ‘since’ to denote a specific point of time (Ex: since 10 AM) and we use ‘for’ to denote a period of time (Ex: for a month). Here, ‘a week’ denotes a period of time. So, ‘for’ is the correct usage here.

WORD BASED ERROR DETECTION

In this pattern, 4 sentences will be given with one or two words highlighted. We have to find the correct or incorrect usage of those words. If all the given words fit contextually in the sentences, we have to choose “all the sentences are correct” option. If all the given words not suite the sentences, then we have to choose “all the sentences are incorrect” option.

Directions (Qs. 11 - 15): In the question, four different sentences are given with one or two words highlighted. The highlighted words may form a correct sentence out of these four sentences. If the highlighted words fit contextually in all the sentences, mark the option “All the sentences are correct” as your answer.

11. A. No one can change the fate, isn't it?
B. It’s very cold now, isn’t it?
C. The bus is coming to the platform, isn’t it?
D. It’s raining outside, isn’t it?
E. All the sentences are correct
Explanation: For a question tag, the sentence and question tag must be in the same tense. If the sentence is positive, the question tag must be negative and if the sentence is negative, the question tag must be positive. Here, the sentence is in negative sense (no one can), and there is a plural pronoun (they). So, the question tag should be positive (can) and plural (they).

Ans: A

B. It is true that I met Cristiano Ronaldo in the house of one of my relatives in the USA.
C. This is my relative's car parking area.
D. The movie shooting takes place in the house of one of my relative's.
E. All the sentences are correct
Explanation: The possession of nouns started with 'one of' is not denoted by apostrophes. So, we can rewrite the phrase - the house of one of my relative’s as the house of one of my relatives. This means that only one relative was chosen from all his known relatives.

Ans: D

13. A. The prophet said to his followers that one ought to work harder in order to attain one goal.
B. The prophet said to his followers that one ought to work hard in order to attain once goal.
C. The prophet said to his followers that one ought to work hard in order to attain one’s goal.
D. The prophet said to his followers that one ought to work hard in order to attain one goal.
E. All the sentences are correct
Explanation: To show a relation or possession of someone/ something, an apostrophe (‘s) is used before a noun or pronoun. So, one’s goal is the correct usage.

B. The special investigation team got three important pieces of information regarding the murder case.
