CONDITIONAL SENTENCES

Sentence

A group of words, so arranged as to give a complete sense is called sentence.
e.g.: My father has gone to Madras.
         Have you read this book?
         How lovely the park is!


Components of a sentence
Every sentence has two essential parts.
(i) Subject (ii) Predicate


Subject: The part, which names the person or thing we are speaking about this is called the subject of the sentence.
e.g.: Ramu (sub) can speak English.
         Macroni (sub) invented Radio.
         Padma (sub) can speak English.

Predicate: The part which tells something about the subject.
e.g.: Our Master went to Madras last week.
         The little girl is playing with her toys.
         My friend will come here tomorrow.

Kinds of sentences
There are five kinds of sentences.
1. Assertive or Declarative sentence
2. Interrogative sentence
3. Imperative sentence
4. Exclamatory sentence
5. Optative sentence

1. Assertive sentence
An assertive sentence is one which states or declares something. It begins with a capital letter and ends with a full stop.
e.g.: Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was born in Allahabad.
         Our library has five thousand books.
         The Prime Minister visits Andhra Pradesh.

2. Interrogative sentence
A sentence which is in the form of a questions is called an interrogative sentence.
e.g.: Why did you knock at the door?
         Do you tell lies?
         Where did you find it?
This interrogative sentence is always started with what, why, where etc., or any auxiliary verb.

3. Imperative sentence
This sentence which expresses a command, a request or an advice is called an imperative sentence.
e.g.: Type these letters at once.
         Please lend me your pen.
         Hurry up please! The time is over.

4. Exclamatory sentence
It expresses a sudden strong feeling of joy, sorrow, wonder or anger etc.,
e.g.: Alas! He is ruined.
        What a beautiful building it is!
        Hurrah! we have won the match.

5. Optative sentence
An optative sentence expresses a wish or a prayer.
e.g.: May god bless you!
        May you live long!
        Wish that I were a king!

Assertive sentences
Examples:

1) I am a doctor.
2) She will not go out with him.
3) I shall go to Delhi.
4) I shall give her money.
5) The sun rises in the East.
6) When I met him, he was playing.
7) While I was singing, she was dancing.
8) I cooked vegetables and he fried rice.
9) Netaji was born in Kolkata. 

10) I must get up early tomorrow.
11) I am unwell.
12) We have won at last.
13) They have not returned the book.
14) You are not to leave the class without permission.
15) I am leaving pune tonight.

Interrogative sentences
Examples:

1) Do you know the residence of the doctor?
2) Why are you late?
3) Will you take me to temple?
4) What are you doing?
5) Will you help me today?
6) Why did you do it?
7) Do you know Rohit?
8) Have you done your homework?
9) How can I do such a foolish work?
10) Could you please lend me some money?
11) Would you like to have dinner with me?

Imperative sentences
Examples:

1) Mohan, please bring me that book.
2) Take umbrella with you when you go out.
3) Don't go out in dark.
4) The captain commanded the soldiers to march on till it was dark.
5) Richa congratulated her son telling him that he had won.
6) She asked the postman either to go or wait.
7) The manager ordered the clerk to run to the next office and bring some stationery.
8) She ordered stranger to leave her room at once.
9) The teacher ordered Suhani to stop talking then.
10) I requested her to help me.
11) The Principal congratulated the boy telling him that he had won.
12) She bitterly cursed him that god would never pardon him.
13) The manager ordered the assistant that the customer might be allowed.
14) The girls requested the gatekeeper to allow them to enter the school.
15) The lady requested her to come sometime.
16) The mother asked her daughter to shut the door.
17) The audience applauded his speech that he had spoken well.
18) The captain warned the soldiers to beware of the danger.

Exclamatory sentences
Examples:

1) Portia said, "Good Heavens, I am ruined!"
2) Mona said, "Hello sameer, good morning!"
3) The king said, "How foolish of me!"
4) Tarun said, "How clever I am!"
5) Deepa said, "what a pity! you have not succeeded"
6) She said, "How beautiful the rose is!"
7) He said, "what a lazy fellow you are!"
8) The captain said, "Hurrah! we have won the match"
9) The doctor said "Alas! the poor man is no more"
10) The spectators said "Bravo! well done"

Optative sentences
Examples:

1) The old man said to his son, "May God bless you!"
2) They said, "May God save our country."
3) He said, "May God pardon my sins!"
4) The beggar said, "May you live long."
5) The woman said to the child, "God helps you!"
6) She said, "May God pardon him."
7) The doctor said to the patient, "I hope you are better now."
8) They said, "Long live the prime minister."
