AIIB help

    Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) agreed to extend a $500 million loan to India to support the country’s efforts to prevent, detect, and respond to the threat posed by Covid-19. The project is funded by AIIB’s Covid-19 Crisis Recovery Facility, created to adapt to urgent financing needs of the bank’s  members impacted by the pandemic. AIIB’s Covid-19 Crisis Recovery Facility, created as part of the  coordinated international response to counter the Covid-19 crisis, has an initial size of $5-10 billion. 


India helps Bangladesh
    India High Commissioner to Bangladesh Riva Ganguly Das handed over the third tranche of emergency medical assistance to the Foreign Minister of Bangladesh A.K. Abdul Momen in Dhaka. The Third tranche consists of RT-PCR COVID-19 kits capable of running thirty thousand tests. The test kits were dispatched to the Institute of Epidemiological Disease Control and Research (IEDCR), Bangladesh.


Postage stamp on smallpox
    World Health Organization (WHO) and the UNO's postal agency released a commemorative postage stamp today on the 40th anniversary of the eradication of smallpox.  Smallpox was eradicated on the back of a 10-year-old effort spearheaded by the WHO involving thousands of health workers around the world to administer half a billion vaccinations.
    In the year 1980, the World Health Assembly issued its official declaration that the world and all peoples have won freedom from smallpox. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said, when the smallpox eradication campaign was launched in 1967, one of the ways countries raised awareness about smallpox was through postage stamps.


India installed 7.3 GW
    In the year 2019, India installed 7.3 GW of solar power across the country, consolidating its position as the third-largest solar market in the world.
    India also had a robust pipeline of utility-scale projects under development of 23.7 GW at the end of 2019, with another 31.5 GW of tenders pending auction, according to a study by Mercom Communications India, a subsidiary of global clean energy communications and consulting firm Mercom Capital Group. The report also revealed that the top 10 large-scale project developers account for 68 per cent market share in 2019. ReNew Power was the top utility-scale developer during 2019, while Azure Power owns the largest project pipeline. Tata Power Solar had the largest cumulative rooftop portfolio, followed by CleanMax Solar.

 

Mission Sagar
    On 10 May 2020, India launched Mission Sagar, as part of the government’s outreach initiative towards five Island nations in the Indian Ocean amidst the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
    Indian Naval Ship Kesari departed for Maldives, Mauritius, Seychelles, Madagascar and Comoros.
    ‘Mission Sagar’ is in line with India’s role as the first responder in the region and builds on the excellent relations existing between these countries to battle the COVID-19 pandemic.

PM-CM Video Conference

    On 11 May 2020, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi interacted with the Chief Ministers of all the States and Union Territories to discuss the road ahead in India’s fight against COVID-19. He said that this understanding of the spread of COVID-19 will help the country in having a focused fight against it.  He said the new way of life would be on the principle of “Jan Se lekar Jag Tak”, from an individual to the whole of humanity. He asked the policymakers to also keep in mind how to embrace new models of teaching and learning in the education sector.
 

Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan
    On 12 May 2020, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation, five days before the third phase of the nationwide lockdown is slated to end on 17 May 2020.  He said that the fourth phase of the lockdown will be in a new form. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman urged to make "local our mantra" and that the "Aatma Nirbhar Bharat" will build the 21st century for the country. 

 

COVID Kavach Elisa
    National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune developed an immunological assay-enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)-to detect antibodies that the body develops in response to infection by the SARS-CoV-2 novel coronavirus The test will detect IgG antibodies present in blood samples. 
    The test is expected to change the dynamics of COVID-19 testing in the country. It can test around 90 samples in approximately two and a half hours. This is the first time India developed an indigenous ELISA test for coronavirus.


DRUVS
    Research Centre Imarat (RCI), the Hyderabad based Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) premier lab developed an automated contactless UVC sanitization cabinet, called ‘Defence Research Ultraviolet Sanitiser’ (DRUVS).  It has been designed to sanitize mobile phones, iPods, laptops, currency notes, cheques, challans, passbooks, paper, envelopes, etc.
    The DRUVS cabinet is having contactless operation which is very important to contain the spread of the virus.  DRUVS provides 360-degree exposure of UVC to the objects placed inside the cabinet. Once the sanitisation is done, the system goes in sleep mode hence the operator need not wait or stand near the device.

 

'Surakshit Dada-Dadi and Nana-Nani Abhiyan'
    On 5 May 2020, the Niti Aayog (National Institution for Transforming India) in association with Piramal Foundation launched a campaign 'Surakshit Dada-Dadi & Nana-Nani Abhiyan' focused on ensuring the wellbeing of senior citizens during the COVID-19 pandemic.
    The scheme aimed at creating awareness about various aspects of senior citizens' health and lifestyle including preventive measures and requisite behavioral changes in view of COVID-19 pandemic.
    The campaign will reach over 2.9 million senior citizens in 25 Aspirational Districts across Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, MP, Maharashtra, Rajasthan & UP; the Aayog tweeted.

 

Vande Bharat Mission 
    World’s largest evacuation operation to bring back stranded Indian nationals from different countries under Vande Bharat Mission on 7 May 2020.
    The government of India chalked out a detailed plan of the first phase of Vande Bharat Mission to bring back around fifteen thousand stranded Indian nationals due to COVID-19 outbreak from 12 countries. 
    Indian Navy launched ‘Operation Samudra Setu’ to repatriate stranded Indian citizens from overseas. INS Jalashwa and INS Magar brought hundreds of Indian Nationals from Maldives.

 

NABARD help
    On 5 May 2020, the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) said that it disbursed Rs.12,767 crore to State Co-operative Banks (StCBs) and Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) across the country for extending credit to farmers during the ongoing lockdown. The loans are being offered for one year at an interest rate of 4.8 per cent, NABARD said in a release. In April 2020, the Reserve Bank of India announced to provide Rs 25,000 crore to NABARD for refinancing Regional Rural Banks (RRBs), cooperative banks and microfinance institutions (MFIs).

 

UV disinfection tower 
    Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) developed an Ultra Violet Disinfection Tower for rapid and chemical-free disinfection of high-infection prone areas.
    UV disinfection tower designed and developed by Laser Science & Technology Centre (LASTEC), the Delhi based premier laboratory of DRDO with the help of M/s New Age Instruments and Materials Private Limited, Gurugram.
    The UV Blaster is useful for high tech surfaces like electronic equipment, computers and other gadgets in laboratories and offices that are not suitable for disinfection with chemical methods.
    The product is also said to be effective in areas with a large flow of people such as airports, shopping malls, metros, hotels, factories, offices, etc. The device can be used remotely through a smartphone or laptop using Wi-Fi.

 

New mandis in e-NAM 
    Two hundred new mandis from seven states joined the e-NAM platform for marketing of agricultural produce recently. They include 94 mandis of Rajasthan, 27 mandis of Tamil Nadu, 25 mandis each from Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat, 16 mandis of Odisha, 11 mandis of Andhra Pradesh and two mandis of Karnataka.
Co-Op banks under SARFAESI Act
    The Supreme Court held that the cooperative banks involved in the activities related to banking are covered within the meaning of ‘banking company’ and Parliament has legislative competence to provide for a procedure for recovery of a loan under the SARFAESI Act.W
    The Securitisation and Reconstruction of Financial Assets and Enforcement of Security Interest (SARFAESI) Act, 2002, allow banks and financial institutions to auction properties (residential and commercial) when borrowers fail to repay their loans. It enables banks to reduce their non-performing assets by adopting measures for recovery or reconstruction.

orld War II medal 

    Russia felicitated the North Korean leader Kim Jong Un with a commemorative World War II medal for his role in preserving the memory of Soviet soldiers killed in North Korea. Russian Ambassador handed the commemorative medal dubbed “75 Years of Victory in the Great Patriotic War 1941-1945” to North Korean Foreign Minister. 
    North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Son Gwon accepted the award from Russian Ambassador Alexander Matsegora on behalf of Kim Jong Un. The Russian embassy said that Kim was awarded “for his great personal contribution to the commemoration of the dead and buried Soviet citizens on the territory of North Korea and showing concern about the safety of the Soviet soldiers’ graves and memorial sites” 

 

International Midwife Day 
    International Midwife Day celebrated on the 5th of May every year, to appreciate the work of  midwives. Midwives are women who have practical knowledge of helping pregnant women give birth. In the early times when there were no highly professional and equipped hospitals for pregnant ladies, they used to give birth to a child at home with the help of these midwives. 
    Each year ICM (International Confederation of Midwives) comes up with a campaign theme to motivate and raise awareness about the status of midwives and the needed and crucial care they provide to mothers and their new-borns.
    This year theme is ‘Midwives with women: celebrate, demonstrate, mobilize, unite – our time is NOW!’ The world needs 9 million more nurses and midwives if it is to achieve universal health coverage by 2030. That’s why the World Health Assembly designated 2020 the International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife.

 

Pulitzer Prizes
    On 4 May 2020, the 2020 Pulitzer Prize winners were announced 15 Journalism categories and seven Book, Drama and Music categories. The Pulitzer Prizes in journalism were first awarded in 1917 and are considered the field’s most prestigious honour in the U.S.A. Three Indian photojournalists Dar Yasin, Mukhtar Khan and Channi Anand of the Associated Press based won the 2020 Pulitzer Prize for ‘feature photography’. 
    They were conferred with Pulitzer for their coverage of the Jammu and Kashmir region during the clampdown that followed the Union government’s decision to divest the region of its special status and reorganise it into two Union Territories. Yasin and Khan are journalists based in Srinagar, while Anand is based in Jammu.
