VOICE

Directions (Qs. 1 - 15): Sentences are given in active/ passive voice. Out of four alternatives suggested, select the one which best expresses the same sentence.

1. My colleagues appreciate my work.
A) My work is appreciated by my friends.
B) My work was appreciated by my friends.
C) My work is being appreciated by my friends.
D) My work was being appreciated by my friends.

Sol: Present indefinite tense active voice: Subject + V1 + Object

In the passive voice of the Present Indefinite tense, sentences are formed using the subject (the receiver of the action) followed by is/ am/ are + past participle (V3). Here’s the structure:

Present indefinite tense passive voice: Subject (the object) + is/ am/ are + V3 + (by + the doer).

2. Karan slapped me in front of everyone.
A) I was being slapped in front of everyone by Karan.
B) I was slapped in front of everyone by Karan.
C) I was slapping in front of everyone by Karan.
D) I had to slap in front of everyone by Karan.

Sol: The given sentence is in the past indefinite tense.

Active voice: Subject (doer) + V2 (past form) + Object

Passive voice: Subject + was/ were + past participle (V3) + by + the doer (optional) The object in the active voice becomes the subject in the passive voice. And the doer is introduced after the preposition ‘by’.

3. The bad character will catch the security guard.
A) The security guard will be caught by the bad character.
B) The security guard has been caught by the bad character.
C) The security guard will be caught by the bad character.
D) The security guard will be catching the bad character.

Sol: The sentence is in the future indefinite tense. 

Structure:

Future indefinite tense active voice: Subject + will + V1 + Object

Future indefinite tense passive voice: Object + will be + V3 + by subject

4. They are taking interviews for different fields.
A) Interviews was being taken for different fields.
B) Interviews are taken for different fields.
C) Interviews were being taken for different fields.
D) Interviews are being taken for different fields.

Sol: The given sentence is in the present continuous tense.

Active voice: Subject (doer) + is/ am/ are + V1 + ing + Object 

Passive voice: The object (receiver of the action) + is/ am/ are + being + V3 + (by the doer)

5. Was she not helping you?
A) Were you not being helped by her?
B) Are you not being helped by her?
C) Were you not being help by her?
D) Did you not help her?

Sol: The sentence is in the past continuous tense.

Active voice: Question words + was/ were + subject + V1 + ing + Object

Passive voice: was/ were + object + being + V3 (by + subject)

6. The students have submitted the projects.
A) The projects were being submitted by them.
B) The projects have been submitted by them.
C) The projects has been submitted by them.
D) The projects are being submitted by them.

Sol: The given sentence is in present perfect tense.

Active voice: Subject (the doer) + has/ have + past participle (V3) + object (the receiver) 

Passive voice: Object (the receiver) + has/ have + been + past participle (V3) + subject (the doer).

7. The lecturer had started the class.
A) The class has been started by the lecturer.
B) Lecturer has been started the class.
C) The class had been started by the lecturer.
D) Lecturer has started the class.

Sol: The given sentence is in the past perfect tense.

Active voice: Subject + had + past participle (V3) + object

Passive voice: Object + had + been + past participle (V3) + by + subject

8. Vimal had finished the project before the deadline.
A) The project was being finished by Vimal before the deadline.
B) The project had been finished by Vimal before the deadline.
C) The project was finished by Vimal before the deadline.
D) The project is being finished by Vimal before the deadline.

Sol: The given sentence is in the past perfect tense.

Structure of past perfect tense in voice

Active voice: Subject + had + V3 + Object

Passive voice: Object + had + been + V3 (by + subject)

Sol: The given sentence is in the future perfect tense. The future perfect tense forms are made by putting ‘will/ shall + have’ before the past participle form of the verb. These sentences can be changed into the passive if the active verb has an object. The passive verb form in the future perfect tense is made by putting ‘will/ shall + have been’ before the past participle form of the verb.

Active verb form: will/ shall + have + past participle form of the verb

Passive verb form: will/ shall + have been + past participle form of the verb.

Sol: The given sentence is in the future indefinite tense.

Active voice: Subject (doer) + shall/ will + V1 + Object Passive voice: Subject + shall/ will + be + V3

Sol: The given sentence is in the present continuous tense. Active voice: Subject (doer) + is/ am/ are + V1 + ing + Object Passive voice: The object (receiver of the action) + is/ am/ are + being + V3 + (by the doer  In the active voice of the present continuoustense, focus is on the person who is doing an action currently in the present. In the passive voice of the present continuous tense, focus is on the object (the receiver of the action) that is receiving the action in the present. The verb tense is formed using “is/ am/ are + being + V3.”

14. Reena was not buying anything at the store.
A) Nothing was being bought at the store by Reena.
B) Nothing was bought at the store by Reena.
C) Nothing were being bought at the store by Reena.
D) Nothing were being bought at the store by Reena.

Sol: The given sentence is in the past continuous tense. The passive voice of past continuous tense is used when we want to focus on the person or the thing that was receiving the action in the past; that was being acted upon. When the receiver of the action (object of the verb) is more important than the doer itself, write the sentence in the passive voice of past continuous tense.

Active voice: Subject + was/ were + not + V1 + ing + Object

Passive voice: object + was/ were + not + being + V3 + by + subject.

15. The melody has been composed wonderfully by Shukla Bhogle.
A) Shukla Bhogle had composed the melody wonderfully.
B) Shukla Bhogle has composed the melody wonderfully.

Sol: The given sentence is the passive voice of the present perfect tense. The structures for passive/ active voices are:

Active: Subject + has/ have + verb (IIIrd form) + Object.

Passive: Object + has/ have + been + verb (IIIrd form) + by + Subject.
