Coded inequalities

As we are all aware that SBI has recently released a notification for 5454 Junior Assistant posts. In the current COVID-19 pandemic scenario, this notification is like an oasis for bank job aspirants. To be in the final list of selected candidates, a candidate has to score optimum marks in the Logical Reasoning (LR) Section as this section is considered a high-scoring section for any candidate, irrespective of his/ her academic background. In the LR Section, a candidate should start with “Coded Inequalities” so that he/ she can easily score 5 marks out of the 5 marks allotted to this topic in less than 3 minutes and that too without using pen and paper. This should be done in both the Prelims and the Mains exams. Therefore, this topic is very important. So, let us start with the topic “Coded Inequalities” and the different models in the topic that are important for the Prelims.

Model I: statement followed by two conclusions and fixed choices.

Directions (Qs.1-5): In these questions, relationship between different elements is shown in the statement. The statement is followed by conclusions numbered I and II. Study the conclusions based on the given statement and decide which of the two conclusions follow(s) the given statement.
Give answer as
1) If only conclusion I follows
2) If only conclusion II follows
3) If either conclusion I or II follows
4) If neither conclusion I nor II follows
5) If both conclusions I and II follow

1. Statement: P > Q = N ≥ M ≤ K > R
Conclusions: Ι. P > R ΙΙ. M < P
Explanation: Two opposite symbols between P and R, hence I does not follow. The symbol '>' is common between P and M, P > M is true ⇒ M < P is also true. Hence II follows.
Ans: 2

2. Statement: A ≤ C ≤ E = K ≥ G = H
Conclusions: I. A > K   II. C ≤ H
Explanation: From the statement A ≤ K is true, hence A > K is false. Two opposite symbols between C and H, hence II does not follow
Ans: 4

3. Statement: P ≤ S < T = B > N ≥ L
Conclusions: I. P < B II. T > L
Explanation: The symbol '<' is common between P and B, hence P < B is true.  The symbol '>' is common between T and L, hence T > L is true. So, both I and II are true
Ans: 5

4. Statement: X ≤ Z = W < T ≥ R > N
Conclusions: I. N < W II. T > X
Explanation: Two opposite symbols between W and N, Hence I does not follow.  The symbol '<' is common between X and T. Hence II follows
Ans: 2

5. Statement: A > E ≤ D = B ≤ H ≥ K = F
Conclusions: I. E = H II. H > E
Explanation: From the statement, E ≤ H is true ⇒ H ≥ E is also true. Hence either I or II follows
Ans: 3

Model II: statement(s) followed by two conclusions and individual choices.

Directions (6-10): In these question, relationship between different elements is shown in the statements. The statements are followed by conclusions. Study the conclusions based on the given statement(s) and select the appropriate answer.

6. Statement: K ≤ X < S = Q ≤ G > A ≤ N
Conclusions: I. S > A   II. G > X
1) either conclusion I or II is true
2) both conclusions I and II are true
3) only conclusion II is true
4) neither conclusion I nor II is true
5) only conclusion I is true
Explanation: Two opposite symbols between S and A. Hence I does not follow. The symbol '<' is common between X and G. X < G is true ⇒ G > X is also true. So, only II is true.
Ans: 3

7. Statement: A ≤ C < H = I ≤ T > R ≤ S Conclusions I. A < I II. I > S
1) only conclusion II is true
2) either conclusion I or II is true
3) both conclusions I and II are true
4) neither conclusion I nor II is true
5) only conclusion I is true
Explanation: The symbol '<' is common between A and I. Hence conclusion I is true. Two opposite symbols between I and S. So conclusion II is false.
Ans: 5

8. Statements: Z > K ≥ L < C; W ≥ U > K
Conclusions I. L > W  II. C > Z
1) either conclusion I or II is true
2) only conclusion I is true
3) only conclusion II is true
4) both conclusions I and II are true
5) neither conclusion I nor II is true
Explanation: Combining the statements we have W > K ≥ L ⇒ W > L is true and L > W is false. Two opposite symbols between Z and C, hence II is false. So, neither I nor II is true.
Ans: 5

9. Statement: M ≥ K = D ≥ S ≥ W
Conclusions: I. W < M   II. W = M
1) either conclusion I or II is true
2) neither conclusion I nor II is true
3) only conclusion II is true
4) only conclusion I is true
5) both conclusions I and II are true
Explanation: From the statement M ≥ W is true ⇒ W ≤ M is also true. Hence, either I or II is true
Ans: 1

10. Statements: T < O ≤ Z ≥ H; N > Z < L
Conclusions: I. N > H  II. T < L
1) only conclusion I is true
2) only conclusion II is true
3) both conclusions I and II are true
4) either conclusion I or II is true
5) neither conclusion I nor II is true
Explanation: Combining the statements, we have N > Z ≥ H, from this N > H is true T < Z < L ⇒ T < L is true. Hence, both I and II are true
Ans: 3
