Data Sufficiency

Directions (Q.1-5): Each of the following questions below consists of a question and three statements denoted by I, II and III. You have to study the questions and the statements and decide whether the question can be answered with any one or two or all of the statements together.
1. What is the area of rectangle? (SBI Clerk - 2018)
I. If ratio of length and breadth of the rectangle is 3 : 2.
II. Circumference of a circle is 440 m and breadth of rectangle is  th of radius of the circle.
III. If length is 50% more than breadth.
Ans: Only II and either I or III.
Explanation:
From I and II,
Let length and breadth be 3x and 2x meters respectively
2πr = 440 ⇒ r = 70 m
∴ breadth = 70 ×  = 10 m
length = 15 m ∴ Area = 10 × 15 = 150 m2
From statement II & III
length : breadth = 15 and 10
Only II and either I or III required to answer

2. What is the capacity of the tank?
I. The radius of the base of the tank is 5 m
II. The height of the tank is double the radius of the base
III. The tank will be one third full when 500 litres of water is filled
Ans: Only III
Explanation:
From only III, we can say that one third is 500 litres, therefore the full capacity is 1500 litres.
From other statements we can’t solve as we don’t know the shape of the tank.

3. How many students from institute 'A' got the placement? (SBI PO - 2017)
I. Number of students studying in institutes A and B are in the ratio of 3 : 4 respectively.
II. Number of students who got placement from institute B is 120% of the number of students who got
placement from institute A.
III. 80% of the students studying in institute B got placement.
Ans: Question cannot be answered even with the information in all three statements
Explanation:
From I : Number of students studying in A and B are; 3x and 4x respectively.
From III : Number of students studying in B

From II : Number of students studying in B
who got placement = 120% of number of students studying in A who got placement

Hence question cannot be answered even with the information in all the three statements.

4. What is the cost of flooring the rectangular hall?
I. The length and breadth of the hall are in the ratio 3 : 2
II. The length of the hall is 48 m and the cost of flooring is Rs.850 per sq.m.
III. The perimeter of the hall is 160 m and the cost of flooring is Rs.850 per sq.m.
Ans: Any two
Explanation:
By taking any two statements we can get length, breadth and cost.
Therefore any two statements are sufficient

5. What is the rate of interest percent per annum? (SBI PO - 2017)
I. An amount doubles itself in 5 years on simple interest.
II. Difference between the compound interest and the simple interest earned on a certain amount in two years is Rs.400.
III. Simple interest earned per annum is Rs.2000
Ans: Either I alone or II and III together
Explanation:
From I,
If P = 100, A = 200; SI = 200 –100 = 100

∴ Either I alone or II and III together will be sufficient In SBI PO or Clerk exam we can get 5 questions from this model. Once you become familiar with the directions, you will find these problems are easier than regular arithmetic problems. These questions require much less calculation than standard problem solving. Evaluate rather than calculate.

Directions (Q.1-5): Each of the questions below consists of a question and two statements numbered I and II are given below it. You have to decide whether the data provided in the statements are sufficient to answer the question. Read both the statements and give answer:
(1) If the data in statement I alone is sufficient to answer the question, while the data in Statement II alone is not sufficient to answer the question.
(2) If the data in statement II alone is sufficient to answer the question, while the data in statement I alone
is not sufficient to answer the question.
(3) If the data in statement I alone or in statement II alone is sufficient to answer the question.
(4) If the data in both the statements I and II are not sufficient to answer the question.
(5) If the data in both the statements I and II together are necessary to answer the question.
1. In what time Train crosses the platform?
I. The speed of the train is 54 kmph.
II. The length of the platform is two times the length of the train of 150 m
Ans: 5
Explanation:

2. What is the age of the son?
I. 4 years ago the average age of the family including father, mother and son was 27 years
II. 5 years hence the average age of the father and mother will be 40
Ans: 5
Explanation:
From Statement I
Total present age of father, mother & son = (27 × 3 + 4 × 3) = 93 years
From statement II
Total present age of father & mother = (40 × 2 - 5 × 2) = 70 years
∴ Son's present age = 103 - 70 = 23 years
∴ Both the statements are required

3. In how many days 24 men can complete the work?
I. 42 men can complete the same work in 12 days.
II. Another work, which is 75% of the first work will be finished by 28 men in 15.75 days.
Ans: 3
Explanation:
From statement I,
42 men can complete in 12 days, 24 men can complete the same work in  × 12 = 21 days
From statement II
If 75% of the work is done in 15.75 days 100% work can be done in  × 15.75 = 21 days 75
∴ Either statement I alone or statement II alone is sufficient to answer

4. Train ‘A’ running at a certain speed crosses another train ‘B’ running at a certain speed in the opposite direction in 24 seconds. What is the length of train ‘B’?
I. The length of both the trains together is 450 m
II. Train ’A’ is slower than train ‘B’.
Ans: 4
Explanation:
From statement I, we can get two trains together length but not seperately From II, we can not get any thing
∴ we cannot solve this question

5. In how many years a simple interest of Rs.2040 will be earned at 6% p.a?

I. The simple interest received for three years on the same sum and at the same rate of interest is Rs.1530.
II. The principal amount is Rs.8500.
Ans: 4
Explanation:

∴ Statement I alone or II alone is sufficient

Directions: The following question consists of three statements denoted by I, II and III. Study the question and the statements and decide whether the question can be answered with any one or two or all of the statements together.

6. What is the speed of boat in still water?
I. The boat can cover 25 km downstream distance in 5 hours.
II. Speed of the stream is two-third of the speed of boat in still water.
III. The boat can cover 25 km upstream distance in 10 hours.
Ans: Any two statements together
Explanation:
Let speed of boat = 'u' and speed of stream = 'v'

By solving any two equations we can get the value of ‘u’
∴ Any two statements will be sufficient to answer the question

7. What is the age of the A?
I. The average age of A, B and C is 16 years
II. The average age of A, C and D is 21 years
III. The average age of B and C is 17 years
Ans: I and III
Explanation:
From statement I we get A, B & C total age.
From statement III, we get B & C total age.
(A + B + C) - (B + C) = A
\ I and III together are sufficient
1

8. Find the volume of a cone?
I. Lateral surface area of the cone is 550 sq.cm
II. Area of a square, whose side is equal to the radius of the base of the cone is 49 sq.cm
III. Height of the cone is 24 cm
Ans: I & II, II & III
Explanation:
volume of cone =
From statement I,
Lateral surface area = prl = 550
From II,
we get radius of cone
From I & II we get radius and height
(∵ h2 = l2 - r2)
∴ I and II are sufficient from II and III we get radius and height
II and III also sufficient

9. What is the two digit number?
I. The difference between the two digits is 4.
II. The digit at unit’s place is less than that at ten’s place by 4.
III. The difference between the two digit number and the number formed by interchanging the digits is 36.
Ans: All of three are not enough to answer.
Explanation:
Let the tens and units digits be 'a' and 'b' respectively.
I. a – b = 4
II. a – b = 4
III. (10a + b) – (10b + a) = 36; a – b = 4
Thus even all the given 3 statements together do not give the answer.

10. What is the profit on selling 12 books?
I. The cost price of 5 books is Rs.225
II. Rs.25 profit is made on each book
III. Selling price of a book and a pen is Rs.45
Ans: II only
Explanation:
With statement II we can get the answer.

Tips to Solve Questions

* Examine the question what you absolutely need in order to find. What is asked? Do we have to find a value or do we have to check a relationship? If you know what information you need to solve the question, then you can find in which statement you get it.
* Having figured out the nature of the question and decided, in a general way, what information is needed to answer it, look at each of the given statements provided. Consider them one at a time, without reference to each other.
* Combine two or three statements If none of the statements by itself is sufficient to answer the question, consider whether you can answer the question by combining the information given in the
statements.
