Overview of the lesson

  Migration is a curse. Most of the migrants are downtrodden. They work as hawkers, painters, rickshaw pullers, construction labours, agricultural labours etc, in unorganised sector.
 The Movement of people from Rural areas to Urban areas for searching livelihood. According to a National Survey every fourth person in India is a migrant. Uneven development and regional disparities are triggered and accelerated migration.
         Migrations are internal and international. Most of the internal migrations are seasonal. International Migration is two types. They are skilled workers migration and un-skilled and semi-skilled workers migration. Seasonal migrants are not only poor, but they do not have their own lands to live at their own native place. The International Migration is also called as "Brain Drain".

Main Points 

* Migration arises out of various Social, Economic and Political reasons.
* Most of the people migrate from rural areas to urban areas mainly for education, employment, marriages and better opportunities.
* Urban migrants use different job searching mechanisms depending upon their skills and educational qualifications.
* Migration is the survival strategy for many families.
* Migration takes place from rural to rural and to urban to rural, Interstate and International.
* Rural people get jobs in unorganised sector in urban areas.
* According to National census Survey, every fourth person in India is a migrant.
* Young girls in migrant families are required to take care of siblings and many of them become dropouts.
* According to 2001 census, about 307 million people are reported as migrants in India.
* Most of the migrants work as hawkers, painters, rickshaw pullers, construction labourers etc., are in un-organised sector.
* The people who migrate for a short period are known as seasonal migrants.
* Rural seasonal migrants work in agriculture and plantations, construction sites, brick kilns and fish processing.
* People with technical skills and professional expertise have migrated to countries like the USA, UK etc.,
* Nearly 1/5 th of total income of Kerala is accounted for by the remittance sent by its workers from the west asia.
* According to a study, that about 6,50,000 labourers migrate from central to western Maharashtra for sugarcane cutting each year.
* The National Commission of rural labour in its report in 1990s found that uneven development and regional disparity triggered and accelerated seasonal migration.
* One third of the world's 200 Million International Migrants moved from one developing country to another.
* International Migration from India is two types.
i) Migration of people with technical skills and professional expertise.
ii) Migration of unskilled and semi skilled workers.
* Saudi Arabia and UAE have been major destinations for unskilled and semiskilled workers from last few decades.
* During the last decade (2001 - 2011), people moved from states such as Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Uttarakhand and Tamil Nadu to states such as Delhi, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Haryana, Punjab and Kerala.
