DEGREES OF COMPARISON

Adjective: An Adjective describes the quality, the quetity, the colour and the number of Nouns and Pronouns. నామవాచకాలు, సర్వనామాల స్వభావాన్ని లేదా పరిమాణాన్ని లేదా రంగును, సంఖ్యను వర్ణించేది విశేషణం.
e.g.: He is a good boy.                     (describing quality)
        He is a tall boy.                        (describing quantity)
        He is a black chap.                  (describing colour)
        He is the one Tamilian.           (describing number)

e.g.: Divya is a tall girl.
        Ramya is taller than Divya.
        Kavya is the tallest of all the three girls.

Noun/Pronoun
(కేవలం ఇద్దరు లేదా రెండింటి మధ్య పోలిక)తో ఒక గుణాన్ని పోల్చి చెప్పే Adjective  రూపాన్ని Comparative Degree అంటారు.
* ఒక Noun ను లేదా Pronoun ను ఒకటి కంటే ఎక్కువ Noun/Pronoun తో ఒక గుణాన్ని పోల్చి చెప్పే Adjective రూపాన్నిSuperlative Degree అంటారు.
     Degrees of Comparison add beauty and variety to the sentences. They are used when we compare one person or one thing with another. In English grammar, the degree of comparison of an adjective or adverb describes the relational value of one thing with something in another clause of a sentence. An adjective may simply describe a quality, (the positive); it may compare the quality with that of another of its kind (comparative degree); and it may compare the quality with many or all others (superlative degree).
     There are three degrees of comparison of an adjective are The Positive Degree, The Comparative Degree and The Superlative Degree.
1. Sridhar is a clever boy. (Positive degree)
2. Sukumar is cleverer than Sridhar. (Comparative degree)
3. Sunil is the cleverest of them all. (Superlative degree)
Sentence 1 says the Sridhar has a certain degree of cleverness, but does not say how clever he is. No comparison is made between Sridhar and anyone else on the point of cleverness. An adjective like clever, used without any comparison, is said to be in the ‘positive degree’.
In sentence 2, comparison is made between Sridhar and Sukumar, and the word cleverer is used to indicate that Sukumar has greater cleverness than Sridhar. An adjective like clever, used to compare only two persons or things, is said to be in the ‘comparative degree’. It is normally followed by than.
In sentence 3, more than two boys are compared and the word cleverest is used to indicate that of all those boys Sushil has the highest degree of cleverness. An adjective like cleverest, used to compare more than two persons or things and indicating the highest degree of a quality, is said to be in the ‘Superlative degree’. It is normally preceded by the Definite Article, the.
          We can use adjectives to make comparisons between two or more things and can express varying degrees of modification.

      e.g.:   tall          taller         tallest         (mono syllabic adjective word)
             clever     cleverer     cleverest     (di syllabic adjective word)

3. ట్రై సిలబిక్, మల్టీ సిలబిక్ (మూడు, అంతకంటే ఎక్కువ సిలబుల్స్ ఉన్న) విశేషణ పదాల ముందు more మరియు most పదాలను ఉంచడం ద్వారా ఆ విశేషణానికి వరుసగా కంపారిటివ్ మరియు సూపర్‌లేటివ్ డిగ్రీ రూపాలను పొందవచ్చు.
e.g.: important       more important        most important
        intelligent       more intelligent         most intelligent

4. ఇర్రెగ్యులర్ డిగ్రీస్ ఆఫ్ కంపారిజన్: సిలబిక్ డివిజన్‌తో సంబంధం లేకుండా కొన్ని విశేషణాలు వాటి యొక్క కంపారిటివ్, సూపర్‌లేటివ్ డిగ్రీలను కలిగి ఉంటాయి.
e.g.: good              better        best
     bad                worse       worst
    south             southern       southernmost
     in                    inner         innermost
    top                    -              topmost

A) Regular Adjectives

1. Positive degree:
In fact, the positive form of the adjective does not show degrees of comparison. The positive degree takes the form 'as … as'. It is used to compare two people or things that are equal, for example:
- That man is as fat as a pig.
- Jenny is as intelligent as Belly.
- This apple is as soggy as that one.
* Notice that there is no change to the adjective. In the examples above, 'fat', 'intelligent'
and 'soggy' are simply the unchanged base forms of the adjective.

2. Comparative degree: The comparative degree is used to compare two unequal people or things. We use the comparative degree of the adjective to compare two unequal people or things.
For regular adjectives, we either:
- add the suffix '-er' to the adjective, or
- add the word 'more' before the adjective.
a) We usually add 'er' to adjectives with one or two syllables. Where the adjective ends in a 'y', we add 'ier'.

Examples:
tall --> taller
Paul is taller than Steven.
healthy --> healthier
e.g. My lunch is healthier than yours.
b) We add 'more' before adjectives with three or more syllables and sometimes before adjectives with only two syllables.

Examples:
grateful --> more grateful
Robert felt more grateful than he had ever felt before.
interesting --> more interesting
This book is more interesting than that one.
irritating --> more irritating
His brother is even more irritating than mine.

3. Superlative Degree: The superlative degree of the adjective is used to compare three
or more unequal people or things It is preceded by the determiner 'the'. a) We usually
add the suffix '-est' to adjectives with one or two syllables. Where the adjective ends in a
'y', we add 'iest'.
Examples:
tall --> taller --> tallest
Paul is the tallest of the three boys.
healthy --> healthier --> healthiest
He is the healthiest member of his family.
cheeky --> cheekier --> cheekiest
Nancy is the cheekiest girl in her class.
b) Instead of taking a suffix, longer adjectives are preceded by the word 'most'. regal -->
more regal --> most regal
Queen Beatrice is regarded as the most regal queen in the world.
beautiful --> more beautiful --> most beautiful
This is the most beautiful dress I have ever seen.
irritating --> more irritating --> most irritating
That is the most irritating song ever composed.

B) Irregular Adjectives
All the rules above apply to regular adjectives. However, there are some adjectives that are irregular. Here is a table of the three degrees of comparison of the most frequently used irregular adjectives.
