‣ పోటీ పరీక్షలకు ఇంగ్లిష్‌
టీఎస్‌పీఎస్సీ, ఏపీపీఎస్సీ, పోలీస్, టెట్, డీఎస్సీ, గురుకుల, ఎస్‌ఎస్‌సీ లాంటి అన్ని పోటీ పరీక్షల్లో ఇంగ్లిష్‌కు ప్రాధాన్యం ఉంది. గ్రామర్‌కి సంబంధించి ఎక్కువగా ప్రశ్నలు subject - verb agreement నుంచి వస్తున్నాయి. ఎక్కువమంది అభ్యర్థులు తికమక పడి సరైన సమాధానాలు గుర్తించలేకపోతున్నారు. వ్యాకరణసూత్రాలు తెలియకపోవడమే దీనికి కారణం.
మొదటగా గుర్తించాల్సిన విషయం ఇచ్చిన వాక్యంలో subject ఏక వచనంలో ఉందా? బహువచనంలో ఉందా? (సింగ్యులరా? ప్లూరలా?). ఈ విషయంపై పరిజ్ఞానం పెంచుకుంటే తప్పులు జరగవు. వ్యాకరణ నిబంధనలు గుర్తుంచుకుని ఎక్కువ ప్రశ్నలు సాధన చేస్తే ఈ టాపిక్‌పై పట్టు సాధించవచ్చు.
కొన్ని subjects 's' తో అంతమైనా అది plural కాకపోవచ్చు (ఉదా: Economics, Physics). మరికొన్ని సబ్జెక్ట్స్‌ 's' తో అంతం కానప్పటికీ అది plural అవొచ్చు (ఉదా: cattle). ఇలాంటి వాటిపై కాస్త ఎక్కువ శ్రద్ధ పెట్టి సాధన చేయాలి. దీనికి సంబంధించి కొన్ని rules and regulations చూద్దాం.
Rule-1:
కొన్ని Nouns plural గా కనిపించినప్పటికీ అవి singular అవుతాయి. కాబట్టి verb singular గానే వాడాలి.
1) Name of subjects : Economics, Linguistics, Civics, Statistics, Physics
2) Name of books : The Arabian Nights
3) Name of diseases : Measles, Mumps, Rickets
4) Name of games : Billiards, Darts, Draughts
5) Name of countries : The United States, The West Indies
Eg: Economics is a difficult subject
Rule-2:
Sentence లోని Main Subject కు verb agreement ఉండాలి.
Eg:
‣ The quality of grapes is good here
‣ Latha and not her friends is guilty
‣ The appeal of the victims for transfer of the cases related to riots to some other states has been accepted
Rule-3:
రెండు subjects. Neither.. nor, either.. or, Not only.. but also, nor, or, None.. but తో జతగా ఉంటే verb దగ్గరి subject ప్రకారం రాయాలి.
Either Ramana or his friends have come
Rule-4:
రెండు subjects.. with/ along with/ together with/ as well as/and not / in addition to/ unlike, like/ no less than అనే వాటితో జతగా వస్తే verb first subject కు agreement కావాలి.
Eg: The Chief Minister along with his Cabinet Ministers has been waiting for the arrival of the P.M.
Rule-5:
రెండు subjects 'and' అనే conjunction తో జతగా వస్తే plural verb వస్తుంది.
Eg: Sriram and Rajani are going there
Rule-6:
రెండు uncountable nouns 'and' అనే conjunction తో జతగా వచ్చి, రెండు వేర్వేరు అంశాలను చర్చిస్తే.. plural verb వస్తుంది.
Eg: poverty and misery come together
Rule-7:
Article అనేది first subject ముందు మాత్రమే వాడితే person/thing ఒక్కటే అని అర్థం కాబట్టి singular verb ఉండాలి.
Eg: A white and black gown was bought by her.
Rule-8:
రెండు subjects ముందు Article వాడితే అప్పుడు Two persons/ two things అనే అర్థం వస్తుంది కాబట్టి plural verb వాడాలి.
Eg: The Director and the Manager have attended
Rule-9:
కొన్ని sentences Imaginary position లో ఉండి I wish/ as if/as though/ suppose/ if లతో మొదలైతే అప్పుడు past plural be form అయిన 'were' వస్తుంది.
Eg: I wish I were an MLA If he were rich, he would help others
Rule-10:
Plural Numbers Plural Verb ను మాత్రమే తీసు కుంటాయి.
Eg: Hundred girls are there in the hostel
Rule-11:
Collective Nouns ను singular గా పరిగణించాలి కాబట్టి singular verb రావాలి.
Eg: The committee has unanimously taken its decision
Rule-12:
Collective Nouns ఉపయోగించే సందర్భంలో విభజనగాని ఉన్నట్లయితే verb plural లో ఉండాలి.
Eg: The jury are divided in their opinion
