Definition Of Idioms

What exactly is an Idiom?

It is a word group whose meaning is different from the meaning of each word in the group. That is, the group of words forming an idiom has a meaning different from the meaning of each word in the idiom. It is a part of usage.

Idiom అంటే జాతీయం/ వాడుక. ఇది మాటల సమూహం; ఇలాంటి మాటల సమూహంలోని ఒక్కో మాట అర్థానికీ, ఆ మాటల సమూహం మొత్తం అర్థానికీ ఏవిధమైన సంబంధం లేకపోతే అలాంటి మాటల సముదాయాన్ని Idiom (జాతీయం) అంటాం.

e.g.: Under the weather

దీన్ని Englishలో జబ్బుగా ఉన్న/ ఒంట్లో బాగాలేని అనే అర్థంతో వాడతాం.You look a bit under the weather = మీరు కాస్త నీరసంగా (వ్యాధి బారిన పడినట్లుగా) కనిపిస్తున్నారు = You look ill.

చూస్తున్నాం కదా! under (కింద)కు గానీ, the weather (శీతోష్ణస్థితి)కి గానీ, under the weather  అనే అర్థానికిగానీ ఏ సంబంధం లేదు. అలాంటి మాటల కూర్పే idiom.

ఇదేవిధంగా మరో idiom చూద్దాం:

     The long and short of : దీని అర్థం, 'సారాంశం/ అసలు విషయం'.

The long and (the) short of it is he cheated me.

(అసలు సంగతేంటంటే వాడు నన్ను మోసం చేశాడు.)

       'long', 'short' అర్థాలకూ, the long and (the) short of అర్థానికీ ఏం సంబంధం లేదు కదా! ఇలాంటి వాటిని 'idioms' అంటాం.

Let us now start learning some of the common idioms in English

Your English appears natural if you speak idiomatic English.

Here are the idioms, they are very common in English, Look at the following conversation:

Himakar: Who shall we turn to then? Who can throw light on the matter?

(మరి మనం ఎవరి సాయం తీసుకోవాలి? ఎవరు ఈ విషయాన్ని గురించి మనకు అర్థమయ్యేలా చెప్పగలరు?)

Bhaskar: I am as much in the dark as you are about it. But it is important for us to come at the truth as early as possible.
