The essay The secret of work is written by Swami Vivekananda, a versatile genius of India. The present essay is extracted from his collection of works The complete works of Swami Vivekananda He is well-known for his speech at "The Parliament of World religions"in Chicago in 1893. In this philosophical essay he explains the nature of work, the things that guide the conduct of human beings and the direct method of curing the miseries of the world.

According to Swami Vivekananda, physical help cannot cure the miseries of the world. Ignorance is the cause of human miseries. Man has to change his character and spiritually strong to get relief from the miseries of the world. Bhagavad Gita says 'Work incessantly and Work is worship'. Good and bad actions have their own consequences. We should work like a master not like a slave. We have to work continuously without selfishness and any attachment. We have to work incessantly without expecting anything in return.

He suggests that our work should be with love and liberation. Otherwise it becomes slave's work. Might and mercy guide the conduct of men. Mercy is heaven itself. We all have to be merciful. When we expect something in return for the work we do that leads to misery. The selfless and unattached man may live in the hearts people forever. Character is everything, if you want to be good you will be good, if you want to be bad you will be so. This is the secret of work.

Be thankful to people who give you privilege to show your humane quality.
