Prem: Hi Shyam, did your team win the match yesterday? You were seen that it would make it to the finals easily.
(శ్యామ్, నిన్న మీ జట్టు గెలిచిందా? అది కచ్చితంగా finals కు చేరుకుంటుందని గట్టి నమ్మకంతో ఉన్నావు కదా?)
Syam: What else? We won hands down. Among us Hemanth played a great game. He was head and shoulders above the rest of us.
(ఇంకేం అనుకున్నావు? మేం సునాయాసంగా గెలిచాం. మాలో హేమంత్ చాలా గొప్పగా ఆడాడు. మిగతావాళ్ల ఆటమీద అతడి ఆట ఎంతో మెరుగ్గా ఉండింది.)
Prem: He takes to the game as a duck takes to water. He certainly has a way with the bat and the ball. That's what I've observed. (బాతు నీటినెంత ఇష్టపడి అందులో సులభంగా ఈదుతుందో, అతనంత ఇష్టపడి సులభంగా ఆడతాడు. Bat నూ, ball నూ ఎలా వాడాలో అతడికి బాగా తెలుసు. నేను గమనించిందది.)
Syam: And he goes to great lengths to practise the game too. He will certainly become a national player in a short time. (అంతేకాకుండా, game practise చేయడానికి చాలా శ్రమపడతాడు త్వరలోనే జాతీయ క్రీడాకారుడవుతాడు).
Prem: The days are getting hotter and hotter day by day. How about a good swim tomorrow morning? (ఎండలు ముదురుతున్నాయి. రేపు ఈతకు వెళ్దామా?)
Syam: I am game for it. In fact I was going to suggest it myself. Shall I call Mohan too. He is good company. (నేను సిద్ధమే. అసలు నేనే అనాలనుకుంటున్నా. మోహన్‌ని కూడా పిలవనా? సరదాగా ఉంటాడు.)
Prem: Why not? How about having something to eat. I am very hungry. (ఎందుకొద్దూ. పిలువ్. ఏమన్నా తిందామా? నాకు చాలా ఆకలిగా ఉంది.)
Syam: That makes two of us. I know a place where we can have hot and delicious stuff, especially idlis and masala dosa. (నా పరిస్థితీ అదే. వేడివేడిగా రుచికరమైన ఫలహారం దొరికే చోటు నాకు తెలుసు. ముఖ్యంగా ఇడ్లీలూ, మసాలదోసె. వెళ్దామా?) 
Prem: What are we waiting for, then? (ఇంకెందుకు ఆలస్యం.)
Grammatically correct English (Grammar rules ప్రకారం సరిగ్గా ఉండే English) మాట్లానంత మాత్రాన సరిపోదు. అలాంటి భాష చాలా కృతకంగా గ్రాంథికంగా ఉండటంతో వినడానికి సహజంగా ఉండదు. కాస్త Conversational (సంభాషణాయుక్తంగా) సహజంగా ఉండాలంటే idiomatic గా ఉండాలి. ఇప్పుడు కొన్ని idioms తెలుసుకుందాం.
Look at the following expressions from the conversation above:
1) ....... it would make it to the finals easily.
2) We won hands down.
3) He was head and shoulders above the rest.
4) He takes to the game as a duck takes to water.
5) He certainly has a way with the bat and the ball.
6) I am game for it.
7) That makes two of us.
పైన underline చేసినవన్నీ కూడా very high frequency (చాలా తరచుగా వాడే) expressions. వీటిని సందర్భోచితంగా వాడాలి. It will make our English sound natural and effective వాటి అర్థం, వాడకం (use) చూద్దాం.
1) Make it to the finals = Make it (to something) = ఏదైనా సాధ్యమవడం/ సాధించడం (ముఖ్యంగా మనం చేయాలనుకున్నది).
* She is quite brilliant. I am sure she will make it to the top = ఆమె చాలా తెలివైంది. తప్పకుండా ఉన్నత స్థానం సాధిస్తుంది.
Dayal: The train leaves at 10.20. It's already 10 and you haven't started yet. 
Train 10.20కి బయల్దేరుతుంది. అప్పుడే పదయ్యింది. నువ్వింకా బయల్దేరలేదు.
Kripal: Don't worry. Just a few more minutes and I am ready. We can certainly make it. (ఏం ఆదుర్దాపడకు. క్షణాల్లో తయారవుతా. తప్పకుండా మనం స్టేషన్‌కు సమయానికి చేరతాం/ ట్రెయిన్ అందుకోగలం).
ఇక్కడ Make it = అందుకోగలగడం.
* Sita: 'Can you get me the book tomorrow?' (ఆ పుస్తకం నాకు రేపు తెచ్చివ్వగలవా?)
Gita: 'I'll certainly make it.' (తెచ్చిస్తాను).
ఇలా మనం ఏ పనైనా పూర్తి చేయడం/ సమయానికి అందుకోవడం/ సాధించగలగడం అనే అర్థంతో 'make it/ make it to'ను తరచూ వాడుతుంటాం.
* I'm afraid I can't make it to the class tomorrow. I am taking mom to hospital tomor- row (రేపు నేను classకు రాలేనేమో. మా అమ్మను ఆస్పత్రికి తీసుకు వెళ్తున్నా.)
2) Win hands down = సునాయాసంగా గెలవడం.
ఇది కూడా చాలా తరచుగా వినిపించే idiom. మీ సంభాషణ లోనూ వాడండి.
* India had it anxious moments in its match against Bangladesh. It did win the mach, but it did not win hands down, as many had expected
[= బంగ్లాదేశ్‌తో ఆడిన match లో భారత్‌కు ఆదుర్దా క్షణాలెదురయ్యాయి. అందరూ అనుకున్నట్టు భారత్ సునాయసంగా/ సులభంగా గెలవలేదు.]
* Ramana: What do you think are Saina Nehwals chances against Chinese bad- minton players? (చైనీస్ క్రీడాకారులతో సైనా నెహ్వాల్ పోటీపడితే గెలిచే అవకాశాలు ఎలా ఉంటాయని నువ్వు అనుకుంటున్నావు?)
Venkat: She will win hands down on any. She might have lost an occasional match, but she is a safe bet. (సునాయాసంగా/ చాలా సులభంగా గెలుస్తుంది, అప్పుడో match, అప్పుడో match ఓడిపోయి ఉండొచ్చు, కానీ ఆమె గెలిచే అవకాశం కచ్చితంగా ఉంది.)
* You think you are going to win hands down. That's being over confident [నువ్వేదో సునాయాసంగా గెలుస్తాననుకుంటున్నావు. అది నీ అతివిశ్వాసం.]
3) Be head and shoulders above = Be clearly much better than = ఇతరులకంటే చాలా గొప్పగా ఉండటం.
* Sachin's record is head and shoulders above any other batsman's in the world
[సచిన్ record ప్రపంచంలోని ఏ ఇతర batsman రికార్డ్ కంటే చాలా గొప్పది/ ఇతరులకూ అతడికీ ఉన్న తేడా చాలా ఎక్కువ.]
* Bhavani: Why is Japan head and shoulders above any other Asian Country in tech - nology? (జపాన్ మిగతా ఆసియా దేశాల కంటే సాంకేతిక ప్రగతిలో అంత ఎక్కువ ముందంజలో ఉండటానికి కారణం ఏమిటి?
Sravani: Japanese are very hard working. (జపాన్ వాళ్లు కష్టపడి పని చేస్తారు).
4) As a duck takes to water = దేన్నైనా అవలీలగా /సునాయాసంగా ఇష్టపడి చేయడం - ఇది English లో చాలా సాధారణంగా వాడే Idiom.
ఇది గమనించండి: Take to = ఇష్టపడటం.
* I did not take to him at first, but soon we became close friends (మొదట అతడంటే నేనిష్టపడలేదు, కానీ త్వరలోనే మంచి స్నేహితులమయ్యాం.)
* Sehwag takes to batting as a duck (takes) to water [నీళ్లంటే బాతు ఎంత ఇష్టపడుతుందో/ ఎంత సులభంగా ఈదుతుందో సెహ్వాగ్‌కు batting అంటే అంత ఇష్టం, అంత సులభం./ (సెహ్వాగ్ bat-ting అవలీలగా చేస్తాడు.)
* Chitra takes to singing as a duck (takes) to water = [చిత్రకు పాడటమంటే అవలీలగా చేయగల పని/ ఇట్టే పాడేస్తుంది.]
* Smitha: 'Who do you think is the best comedian on the Telugu screen?' (తెలుగు తెర మీద గొప్ప హాస్యనటుడెవరు?)
Geetha: Why? undoubtedly Brahmanandam. He takes to humour as a duck (takes) to water [సందేహం ఎందుకు? బ్రహ్మానందమే. ఆయనకు హాస్యం అవలీలగా వచ్చేస్తుంది. (మంచి నీళ్లప్రాయం)].
కొన్నిసార్లు 'As a duck to water' బదులు 'as a fish takes to water' అని కూడా అంటారు. ఇది కూడా accepted usage.
5) Have a way with something deal with/ handle something very well = ఏదైనా సమర్థంగా విజయవంతంగా నిర్వహించగలగడం.
* Late Savithri had a way with acting any role
(దివంగత నటి సావిత్రి ఏ పాత్రనైనా సమర్థవంతంగా చేయగలిగేది. ఎలా చేయగలిగేదో తెలియదు కానీ తప్పకుండా చేసేది.)
* Pranav: Why do you depend on him when it comes to computers? (Computers విషయంలో అతడిమీద అంత ఆధారపడతావెందుకు?)
Pranathi: He has a way with computers and can run any programme in a jiffy [అతడు చాలా తేలిగ్గా computers నిర్వహించగలడు. ఏ ప్రోగ్రామ్‌నైనా చిటికెలో చేయగలడు. (in a jiffy = చిటికెలో)].
* She has a way with the violin (వయోలిన్‌ను (ఫిడేలు) ఆమె చాలా తేలిగ్గా వాయించగలదు. వయోలిన్ ఆమె ఎలా చెబితే అలా వింటుంది.)
6) Be a game for something = సిద్ధం.
* Suman: I am going to walk the whole distance. How about you? (ఈ మొత్తం దూరం నేను నడవాలనుకుంటున్నా. నీ సంగతేంటి?)
Chalam: I am game for it. (నేను సిద్ధమే.)
* Keerthi: Are you prepared for an investment of a lakh rupees. (ఓ లక్ష రూపాయల పెట్టుబడికి నువ్వు సిద్ధమేనా?)
Lata: I am game for it. (నేను సిద్ధమే/ నేను సై.)
ఇది మనం తరచూ వాడదగినమాట.
7) That makes two of us = ఇద్దరం ఒకే పరిస్థితిలో ఉండటం.
* Ravi: 'Did you also put your son in that bad school?' (నువ్వు కూడా మీ అబ్బాయిని అదే పనికిరాని school లో చేర్చావా?)
Srinu: 'Yea' (అవును).
Ravi: 'Well, that makes two of us.' (బాగుంది. ఇద్దరం ఒకే పరిస్థితిలో ఉన్నామన్నమాట).
* 'Are you a supporter of Loksatta too? Well, that makes two of us'. (నువ్వు కూడా లోక్‌సత్తా సపోర్టరా? అయితే నువ్వు నాకు తోడన్నమాట).
ఇవన్నీ నిత్య జీవితంలో ఉపయోగించి మన English సహజంగా, informal గా అనిపించేలా చేద్దాం.
