Ecology and Environment

2 Marks Questions

1. Distinguish the terms phototaxis and photokinesis?
A: Phototaxis: is oriented locomotor movement of an organism towards/ away from the direction of light.

e.g.: Cockroach
Photokinesis: is the influence of light on non-directional movement of organisms as seen in the larvae of Pinnotheres macculatus the mussel crab. Intensity of light influences the velocity of the movement of organism.

2. What is an ecosystem?
A: Ecosystem is the next level of organisation above the level of biological community. An ecosystem is a functional unit of the biosphere in which members of the community interact among themselves and with surronding environment.

3. Define mutualism. Give one example?
A: This type of interaction benefits both the interacting species.
e.g.: Lichens represent an intimate mutualistic relationship between a fungus and photosynthetic algae.

4. What is camouflage? Give its significance?
A: Some species of insects and frogs are cryptically coloured (Camouflage) to avoid being detected easily by the predator.
e.g.: Stick insect.

5. Define commensalism. Give an example?
A: The interaction where one species is benefited and the other is neither benefited nor harmed is called 'commensalism'.
e.g.: Barnacles growing on the back of a whale benefit while the whale derives no noticeable benefit.

6. What are the advantages of UV rays?
A: UV radiation kills the micro organisms present on the body surfaces of animals. UV radiation helps in the conversion of sterols present in the skin into vitamin-D in mammales.

7. Distinguish between lotic and lentic habitats?
A: The flowing water bodies are called- lotic
e.g.: Rivers, Streams.
The still water bodies are called lentic.
e.g.: Ponds, Lakes.

8. Distinguish between Eurythermal and stenothermal animals?
A: A few organisms can tolerate and thrive in a wide range of temperature, they are called- eurythermal.
e.g.: Homeotherms.
A vast majority of organisms are restricted to a narrow range of temperatures are called- stenothermal.
e.g.: Fishes, Corals.
