Rahul: Certainly Sankar is the greatest singer we have, isn't he?
(కచ్చితంగా మనకున్న గాయకుల్లో శంకర్ అత్యంత గొప్పవాడు, కదా?)
Kuber: Of course, his voice is better than that of any other singer.
(నిజమే. ఇతర గాయకుల కంటే అతడి కంఠం మెరుగైంది.)
Rahul: I agree with you there. Further, no other singer's voice is as clear as his.
(ఆ విషయం నేను ఒప్పుకుంటాను. అంతేకాకుండా ఇతర ఏ గాయకుడి కంఠమైనా, అతడి కంఠమంత స్పష్టంగా ఉండదు.)
Kuber: The only problem, however, is that his interest in music, is not as deep as that of other singers.
(వచ్చిన సమస్యల్లా ఏంటంటే... సంగీతంలో అతడికి ఇతర గాయకులకున్నంత శ్రద్ధ లేదు.)
Rahul: His father was one of the greatest violinists of his time. No doubt he takes after his father.
(అతడి తండ్రి ఆ రోజుల్లో గొప్ప వయెలిన్ విద్వాంసుల్లో ఒకరు. ఆయన పోలిక ఈయనకు వచ్చిందనడంలో సందేహం లేదు.)
Kuber: Only, he lacks his father's devotion to the art.
(ఒక్కటేంటంటే ఈయనకు అతడి తండ్రికి ఉన్నంత అంకితభావం లేదు)
The elephant is the largest animal in the world.
(ప్రపంచంలోని అన్ని జంతువుల్లో ఏనుగు అత్యంత పెద్దది) - Superlative degree
ఇలాంటి పోలిక ఉన్నప్పుడు, దాన్ని ఎలా Comparative degree, Positive degree లకు మార్చాలో చూద్దాం:
Now look at the following sentences from the conversation above.
Sankar is the greatest singer we have.
(మనకున్న గాయకుల్లో శంకర్ అత్యంత గొప్ప గాయకుడు)- ఇక్కడ great కు ''greatest' superlative degree. Comparative లోకి మార్చాలంటే, మనం greater అని వాడాలి.
Comparative degree: Sankar is greater than any other singer/ all other singers we have. (మనకున్న గాయకులందరి కంటే శంకర్ గొప్ప గాయకుడు)
Positive degree: No other singer we have is as/so great as Sankar.
(మనకున్న ఏ ఇతర గాయకుడూ శంకర్ అంత గొప్పవాడు కాదు.)
Imp: adjective లో ఉన్న syllable సంఖ్య, చివరి మాట ఆధారంగా Adjectives ను Comparative, Superlative degrees లోకి మార్చవచ్చు. (Syllable = ఒక)
ప్రతి మాట (word)లో Syllable/Syllables ఉంటాయి.
'Decide' - దీనిలో two syllables ఉన్నాయి. 1) De 2) cide
Construction ఈ పదంలో Three Syllables ఉన్నాయి. 1) con, 2) struc 3) tion.
ఒక adjective కు, comparative, superlative ఎలా వస్తాయనేది, వాటిలో ఉన్న syllables సంఖ్యను, చివరి శబ్దాన్ని అనుసరించి ఉంటుంది.
1. చివర 'e' లేకుండా ఒకే syllable ఉండే adjectives కు 'er', 'est'ని చేరిస్తే comparative, superlative degree లు వస్తాయి.
Positive Comparative Superlative
high higher (+er) highest (+est)
small smaller (+er) smallest (+est)
2. చివర 'e' వచ్చే adjectives కు '+r'ను చేరిస్తే Comparative, '+st' ని చేరిస్తే Superlative వస్తాయి.
Positive Comparative Superlative
fine finer (+r) finest (+est)
brave braver (+r) bravest (+est)
3. హ్రస్వ (short) syllable ఉండి, చివర single consonant శబ్దం వస్తే, ఆ consonant ను రెట్టింపు చేసి దానికి '+er' చేరిస్తే, comparative, '+est' చేరిస్తే superlative degree వస్తాయి.
Positive Comparative Superlative
big bigger (+ger) biggest (+gest)
thin thinner (+ner) thinnest (+nest)
4. చివర 'y' వచ్చి దాని ముందు consonant sound వచ్చే adjectivesకు, చివరి y ముందు '+ier' చేరిస్తే comparative, '+iest' చేరిస్తే superlative degree వస్తాయి.
Positive Comparative Superlative
easy easier (+ier) easiest (+ iest)
holy holier (+ier) holiest (+ iest)
5. Three syllables కంటే ఎక్కువ adjectives విషయంలో వాటి ముందు more చేరిస్తే Comparative, most చేరిస్తే Superlative degree వస్తాయి.
Positive Comparative Superlative
beautiful: more beautiful most beautiful
difficult: more difficult most difficult
6. కొన్ని adjectives పైన చెప్పిన పద్ధతుల్లో కాకుండా, ఒక పద్ధతి లేకుండా Comparative, Superlative గా ఏర్పడతాయి.
Positive Comparative Superlative
bad/ill worse worst
good better best
little less least
many/much more most
far farther farthest
7. Superior (గొప్ప), Inferior (తక్కువ రకమైన), Senior (వయసులో/అనుభవంలో పెద్ద), Junior (వయసులో/అనుభవంలో చిన్న), Prior (అంతకు ముందే ఉన్న)- ఈ adjectives అన్నీ Comparative degrees. వీటికి Superlative, Positive degrees లేవు. వీటి తర్వాత 'to' మాత్రమే వస్తుంది, than రాదు.
e.g.: a) Team A is superior to team B
(A జట్టు, B జట్టు కంటే మెరుగైంది)
b) Team B is inferior to team A
(B జట్టు, A జట్టుకంటే తక్కువైంది)

e) Indian Independence was prior to Gandhi's death
(గాంధీ మరణం కంటే ముందే భారత్కు స్వాతంత్య్రం వచ్చింది)
మనం మామూలుగా ఒకే రకమైన వస్తువులనూ, మనుషులనూ, జంతువులనూ వివిధ రకాలుగా పోలుస్తుంటాం. మనం పోల్చే విధానం ద్వారా, ఒక degree నుంచి మరో degree లోకి మారుస్తుంటాం. వాటిని చూద్దాం.
