Gautham: I am afraid your knowledge is not up to date. You'd (you had) better be in touch with the latest developments in the subject (నీ జ్ఞానం ప్రస్తుత పరిస్థితులకు సరిపోవడం లేదని నా అనుమానం. సబ్జెక్టులో అత్యాధునికమైన అభివృద్ధి నీకు తెలీడం మంచిది).
Sankar: So do I feel too. I don't know how to be abreast of the latest developments in the subject (నాకూ అదే అనిపిస్తోంది. ఈ విషయంలో అత్యాధునిక ప్రగతిని ఎలా తెలుసుకోవాలనేది నాకు తెలీడం లేదు).
Gautham: You'd better brush up your knowledge of the subject. Otherwise getting a job will be very difficult for you (కాలానుగుణంగా నువ్వు నీ విషయ పరిజ్ఞానం పెంచుకోవాలి. లేదంటే నీకు ఉద్యోగం తెచ్చుకోవడం చాలా కష్టమైపోతుంది).
Sankar: I will start right from today. I will go to the library and get the latest books on the subject (ఈరోజు నుంచే ప్రారంభిస్తా. గ్రంథాలయానికి వెళ్లి ఈ విషయం మీద సరికొత్త పుస్తకాలను తెచ్చుకుంటా).
Gautham: That is what you should do to keep up with what is going on now (ఇప్పుడు జరుగుతున్న విషయాలను తెలుసుకోవాలంటే నువ్వు చేయాల్సిన పని అదే).
Sankar: I approached Sudheer to help me in the matter. But for reasons best known to him, he would not talk to me (నేనీ విషయంలో సుధీర్‌ సాయాన్ని కోరాను. కానీ తన సొంత కారణాల వల్ల నాతో మాట్లాడలేదు).
Gautham: Don't you just worry. My brother told me off, when I was bad at my subject. That spurred me on to study it thoroughly. My brother appreciates me now (ఏం బాధపడకు. నాకు నా సబ్జెక్టు తెలియనప్పుడు మా అన్న తిట్టాడు. అదే నన్ను ఆ సబ్జెక్టును క్షుణ్ణంగా చదవడానికి ప్రోత్సహించింది. మా అన్న నన్నిపుడు మెచ్చుకుంటున్నాడు).
Sankar: Of late I have started eating more than I should, and that is making me drowsy. I should cut back, gird up my loins and study seriously (ఈ మధ్య నేను తినాల్సినదానికంటే ఎక్కువే తింటున్నాను, దాంతో నాకు మత్తువస్తోంది. నేను తినడం తగ్గించుకుని, నడుం బిగించి బాగా చదవాలి).
Gautham: Yea, that is a good resolve. Wish you all success (అది మంచి నిర్ణయం. నీకు జయమవ్వాలని నా కోరిక).
Now let us look at the phrasal verbs in detail
1. To be abreast of = to be in touch with the latest developments in a subject (ఒక విషయంలో ప్రస్తుతం జరుగుతున్న పరిణామాలను తెలుసుకోవడం).
a) Sumanth: The doctor I went to yesterday was useless. He does not know the latest developments in his subject (నిన్న నేను వెళ్లిన డాక్టర్‌ వల్ల ఏం ఉపయోగం లేదు. వైద్యంలో ఇప్పుడు జరుగుతున్న పరిణామాలు ఆయనకు తెలీదు).
Srinidhi: Doctors should keep abreast of the latest in the subject. Otherwise they become useless, and do more harm to the patients than good (వైద్యులు వైద్యరంగంలో నేడు జరుగుతున్న మార్పులను తెలుసుకుని ఉండాలి. లేదంటే వాళ్ల వల్ల ప్రయోజనం లేకపోగా, రోగులకు మేలు కంటే కీడే ఎక్కువగా జరుగుతుంది).
b) Viswa: Dr. Sriram is eminent in his field. There is not a thing in his subject he does not know (డా.శ్రీరామ్‌ తన రంగంలో చాలా నిష్ణాతుడు. ఆయనకు తన సబ్జెక్టు విషయంలో తెలియనిదే లేదు).
Eswar: He is an eminent professor. He keeps himself abreast of whatever happens newly in his subject. There isn't a thing he doesn't know (ఆయన తన సబ్జెక్టులో గొప్ప పండితుడు. తన రంగంలో కొత్తగా జరిగే పరిణామాలన్నింటినీ తెలుసుకుంటుంటాడు. ఆయనకు తెలియని విషయమే లేదు).
2. To brush up = Improve one's knowledge (జ్ఞానాన్ని పెంపొందించుకోవడం)
a) Prabhalar: You must know what is happening now in your subject. Otherwise you won't be fit for any job (నీ సబ్జెక్టులో ఏం జరుగుతోందో నువ్వు తెలుసుకోవాలి. లేకపోతే నీకు ఏ ఉద్యోగమూ రాదు).
Naresh: I am doing my best. I am going to the library every day and brushing up my knowledge (నా శాయశక్తులా ప్రయత్నిస్తున్నా. రోజూ గ్రంథాలయానికెళ్లి నా విజ్ఞానాన్ని పెంపొందించుకుంటున్నా).
b) Prakash: How can he make it to the job? He does not know the latest information. He never reads the newspaper (అతనికెలా ఉద్యోగం వస్తుంది? కొత్త సమాచారం అతనికి తెలీదు. వార్తాపత్రికలు అస్సలు చదవడు)
Vinai: He has to constantly brush up on current affairs. He can't get a job otherwise (ప్రస్తుత సంఘటనలను గురించిన సమాచారాన్ని తెలుసుకోవాలి. లేకపోతే అతనికి ఉద్యోగం రాదు).
3) Spur somebody on = Encourage someone (ఒకరిని ప్రోత్సహించడం).
a) Sitaram: Our friend Prabhakar has become quite serious about his work. His juniors excelled him in the work, and he feels ashamed of it (మన స్నేహితుడు ప్రభాకర్‌ తన పని విషయం చాలా శ్రద్ధగా తెలుసుకుంటాడు. అతనికన్నా తక్కువ శ్రేణిలో ఉన్నవాళ్లు అతన్ని అధిగమించడంతో తాను చాలా సిగ్గు పడుతున్నాడు).
Lakshman: They spurred him on to learn whatever is new (ఆ తక్కువ శ్రేణి వాళ్ల ప్రతిభే అతన్ని కొత్త విషయాలను నేర్చుకునేలా పురిగొల్పింది).
